I want to get a fuel barrel

If I get a used barrel I'm sure it won't be perfectly rust free. What could I do to make it safe? I would definitely use a filter. This diesel would be used in my wife's beetle TDI which is a pumpe duese(sp. ) . It would be nice to have a good supply of fuel on hand as crazy as things are right now. I would like to store about 2-400 gallons. I have also thought about getting used 55 gal. oil drums, then I wouldn't have to worry about rust. I plan on storing this fuel inside a building. That is something I wouldn't even consider if it was gasoline.

In our area, the local Shell fuel distributor sells empty, but clean, barrels for $10 - and if desired, will also cut the tops out for customers. These are steel barrels, and are barrels used for dispensing oil - so are perfectly compatible for what you are wanting - maybe a similar fuel distributor in your area would do the same?

Look around a bit, there are plastic 55 gallon drums that are fuel compatible. Also some 55 gallon metal drums are lined with a plastic/rubber type coating so no worries on rust.

My buddy has a couple plastic totes in metal cages. They hold about 150 gals. He purchased them from local farmer who buys liquid fertilizer in them. Flushs them real well them fills them with BIO. You can move em with a pallet jack. Another good barrel is a windshield washer fluid barrel. They are lined. Check with a fleet service garage you may get for free. I did.

I'd wash 'em real good. I hear diesel and fertilizer can do funny things.

Check at surplus stores. The one here in Reno sells 55 gallon drums that used to have peanut butter, jelly, breakfast bar filling, etc. Pressure wash them out and they should be good. Also, they have poly drums.

thanks for the replies! I found some oil drums for sale from a local dist. for $20. 00 each, a little pricey, but they are totally spotless. I think I will get one of those barrel carts from northern tool along with a 12 volt pump. I have a flat bed trailer to transport the barrels with.

$20! :{ I get the blue plastic 55 gallon drums for $7 and change. Rust is not an issue! I got them in 2001 and don't remember what was in them. The metal barrels I buy (for the same price) for burning stuff are originally used for honey.

What about 275 gal home heating tanks that fuel is stored in in many basements. Check with local plumbers. I've gotten a few of them from plumber's when they convert a home heating system from oil to gas. That is what I use to store extra fuel for the truck and also run standby generator from same tank

For some reason, that just does not sound too appetizing!
