Ok I know that I need gauges. I would have bought them this month if I hadn't hit that rock and wiped out my tie rod and track bar. But I want to play. If I slide the plate forward, crank the star wheel, and plug the wastegate, will my egt's run to hot? I'm not going floorboard it up long hills or anything stupid. How hot could it get?

Dear Santa please give me some gauges.

I never had a problem with EGT with my stock plate foward. I used a boost elbow from TST, it was cheap. The only airflow mod I had was a different muffler, I still ran (and still do) the stock airbox/filter. I had it get to 900* one time (post turbo) and that was towing ~11,000lbs up a pretty decent hill trying to maintain 75mph. I was nice to it most of the time though, I tried not to work it to hard. I had the AFC about centered, and the starwheel was about 5 clicks away from the motor after it contacted the spring.

Be careful, though. I only ran the stock plate for about 3 months foward and then had to get a #11. I needed more! And now I do again... .....

McCram,

Move the plate, not to far. Turn the star wheel. Try to find a used 16 turbo manifold without the wastegate, till then- plug it. Pull the muffler & cat. Either clear out a straight thru path or just substitute some pipe.

Once the bug has bitten you can go the 3,00 gov & Afc spring kits, best bang for the buck. While they get done, slide that new plate in. Then you can really enjoy that truck.

Warning--- THERE IS NO STOPPING FROM THEN!

Have fun & play hard.

Why not just wait till you can afford the gages? Whats the big hurry? With the gages installed you will be able to have a stock baseline to use as a reference. Then make the changes you wish. I myself do not think sliding the plate forward nets any real HP. Also cranking the star wheel does nothing but make your truck look like it's broken, the black smoke is diesel fuel you didn't burn but paid for, not a real smart move. If you want some real power, save for the gages and then invest in a new plate, they are relatively cheap and will do a much better job.

Sliding the stock plate is good practice for plate changing. Wish somebody had quick disconnects for the AFC housing.

When you slide, you might want to leave out the knock off screw & go get 4 cap heads or your screw/bolt head of choice. It's metric. Allens are nice. Mine didn't leak with the knock of screw out.

Nice thing about sliding the stock plate ... on yours with the 215hp pump, it's worth an easy (spelled free) 100 ft-lbs of torque.

It does make a big difference y knot at least on the 215 pump. Before the stock plate was slid my truck dynoed at 195 or so after it was 235-245. 40-50hps at the wheels for nothing seems like a pretty big deal to me.....

I didn't think it had such an effect, just moving the stock plate.

But I still think you should wait till you get some gages install in the truck.

Forrest told me that TST said 40-60 hp can be achieved by sliding the plate in a 215 pump. They told him the 215 is very sensitive to plate movement. I believe piers told me . 020 is good for about 20hp (at least with a #10).

I noticed a big improvement between the stock location and full foward. And about 5 pounds of boost, also.

I agree though, get the guages first. nice peace of mind and good for future reference.

Thanks pwerwagn, Thats what I was looking for. Someone has already been in my housing (one of the reasons I want to open it up) so I do not have to worry about bolts. When I get gauges, I will go back to stock for the baseline. What is the hurry? Remember when you were a kid and had presents to open? Thats what I feel like, I want to play with my toy. I have a reprieve though. Mr Bob just delivered a 04 track bar to my door and I'm going to go put it in. I've got the parts for a straight pipe in the shop too.

I know exactly what you mean. I felt the same way. That is why I kept checking Ebay over and over as soon as I got my CTD. I picked up a boost/egt combo for ~100$. then I got a cheap chrome bracket and mounted them under the dash. within a week or two of owning the truck, I slid the plate.

Last friday there were a set of isspro boost/pyro with the dodge pillar pod on ebay. it went for 138$. check around. you can get used gauges decently cheap sometimes.

McCRam,

My highest EGT comes from holding speed up hill at part throttle and I have an auto trans. With your manual, you can easily create heat up hill just maintaining speed. That's why we all need gauges. HTH
