I worked auto parts during my mis-spent youth. One of the things I enjoyed about the job was the custom/exotic type stuff.



As far as 10 different names for the same thing, the boss told me of when he first started, a guy comes in and asks for a can of "freezone. " So customer buys his can of R-12, walks out, opens his radiator cap and sticks a screwdriver through the top. One can frozen to his hand later...



Then there was the guy that bought a set of Champion plugs for his off-shore boat from me. He comes in later and was about to come over the counter after me. Champion had a bit of a quality problem in those days. He said he was changing the plugs out in the gulf and tossing the old ones over the side after he took them out. Champion "forgot" to put threads on the last one. He said it would not run without the plug. Sure nuff the plug had never been through the threader.

Had something like that happen once a couple of years ago. Bought some hydraulic filters for a Deere 9500 combine. 1 of the 3 filters had no threads. Went back to dealer and exchanged it for a different one. Haven't had that happen since.

In case anyone is wondering what Rusty's post is all about. That is how to remember the number to color association for resistors and other electronic stuff. Black=0, Brown=1, ... . I learned the "bad boys" thing in the Army. I'll bet it's not taught that way now.

Lets turn it back around. I told my wife last night what you did and she got a kick out it. I stay away from those places when possible. We have an independent parts place that has been good to me for over 15 years. I call them and the part is waitning on the counter when I get there. The auto type zone places I use for oil and wax type tuff now based on what you said.

A little payback from my side of the counter today! On monday a customer called me and in a very big hurry asked me if I had any replacement clutch discs for his Woods Mower. We didn't have them (which pi$$ed him off!) so he told me to order them, I asked him what size they were and he told me that it didn't matter that they were all the same and then hung up! ( I love it when someone says their all the same!) Anyway I looked it up and low and behold there are several different sizes! This guy was in too much of a hurry to wait and make sure I ordered the right one because, after all, their all the same! In his haste he didn't leave a phone number so, today when his mower was broke down and he really needed those clutches I got the privilege of telling him that they were in fact not all the same and that since he was in such a hurry and didn't leave a number he would have to wait a couple more days! I was thoroughly satisfied! It never pays to be a rude A--hole to your parts man! Plus I don't think he knows that I set the pricing on most parts! Jeremy.

I have a friend who owns a Foreign Auto Parts store and he has an endless supply of customers with stupid questions. The only one I can recall was when a couple of them ricer types came in and asked if he could get an intake manifold.



"What's if for he asked?"



"A honda", was the reply.



To make a long story short, they didn't want an 'intake manifold'. They wanted an aftermarket intake scoop/ air filter!!!

I know how he feels. I have a younger friend that bought a mustang. He knew I had one so was asking me were he could get some parts to make his faster. He lept asking for an intake(his car is a v-6). I kept telling him that I didn't know of any intakes for the newer v-6 cars. He insisted that he had seen them and that they were on ebay for sale. When I asked him to show them to me, he took me to the cold air induction kits. I had to tell him that they are two entirely different things.

On the plus side, I was lucky enough to have a parts store in my hometown where you could bring in an old part from just about anything and he knew what part number to go get just by looking at it. Didn't need to tell him much of anything unless I had modified it in some way. I miss that place but the guy has probably retired by now.

At the Mack dealer that we got our trucks from, they have a parts guy there that is like that. Almost never has to look it up to get the right part. 'Bout the only time is if it is something that isn't sold very often. He can do it over the phone too.

I was at the junkyard the other day. All I needed was some seats for my 98. My dog mistook the center seat for a chew toy. The guy at the counter looked like wilford brimley. I was sure he was the one. Boy was I wrong. It turned into a fiasco that took over an hour to straighten out. On top of it the guy was about the biggest a hole I had spoken with in the last 6 months. You win some you loose some.
