The other day I was at a construction site where the contractor had an older 6. 2 3/4 4x4 with 200,000+. I was BS'ing with him as I discovered that he was a big GM fan. I did the small talk thing and asked him how he liked his old 6. 2 and he told me how great it had been for him. I then asked him what he thought about the new DMAX. He the went on to tell me his brother-in-law has a new one and he loves it, and that it simply out-performs anything etc, etc - blah, blah, blah! He then went into how the Cummins is a good engine but it is really a light duty block and NOT BUILT AS TOUGH AS A BIG BLOCK? Ok - you guys in the know - how exactly does our little 5. 9 compare to a Big Block and also how do they compare to the Powerstroke? For example I've heard that the rods on the ISB are huge in comparisson. Is this true - anyother examples?

The "big" Powerstroke only has approx. half the main bearing surface area of the "little" Cummins inline 6. You might also tell him, we have a tractor engine, de-rated & shoe horned into a pickup. I've never seen a tractor with a PS or DuraMax yet.

The Cummins 5. 9 liter ISB is available in Bluebird School Bus, the Thomas School Bus, the Mid-range Ford F-550's and up, Countless mid-sized trucks such as UPS delivery vans, Mass transit buses, and numerous marine applications.

Name one of those applications that also have D-max or Powerstroke powerplant available.

nuff said?

The marine industry rates the Cummins ISB has a medium duty engine. Powerchokes and Maxi-pads get modified and are considered through aways and have a light duty rating.

Actually the Powerstroke is available in a number of IH school bus and Fire truck chassis. It is known as the DT444E. It is available in a chassis up to a Class 6 (26-33K GVW). As a Western Star Dealer I can get an ISB in up to a Class 8 truck (33K+). The way to look at the B model Cummins is that it is a small version of a larger diesel engine i. e Cummins N14, Cat 3406, Detroit S60. The only real difference is that the B models Cummins is dry sleeved and not wet sleeved (no liners that can be replaced). all that to say this. It is a medium-heavy duty engine where the Powerstroke and Duramax are light - medium.

Hammersley, How fare did this guy have his head up his a$$?

Some people just don't think before they speak.

Me included sometimes. :)

No need for BS, it's on the engine data tag for God and eveyone else to read**Cummins---"Medium heavy duty"

**Powerstroke---"Light heavy duty"

**D-Max---"Light heavy duty"

That otta shut him up pop some hoods and see for your self. :D :D

Where is the Tag

Mr. C - the Engine Tag - sounds great - now not to sound stupid, but where exactly is this tag on all 3 engines - I'd love to show my buddies this... .

tags

Hammersly,The i. d. plate on your Cummins is located on the drivers side, front of engine just behind the timing cover(same place as on bigger Cummins). powerjokes on passenger side valve cover. Not sure about chubby diesel, probably on one of the valve covers. I have looked at one of the fords at work, sure enough "light duty diesel". Don't worry too much about what that chevy guy says. Take it from a diesel mechanic, you've got the best diesel pickup out there. 6. 2s and 6. 5s were a joke. underbuilt to say the least. Big problems with broken cranks and cracked blocks. And gutless  . Had one at the K. w. dealer I used to work at. I took it out once:eek: could not believe how uder powered this thing was. Of course I get used to all that grunt of my C. T. D. and nothing else compares;) . As for the dura? They haven't been out long enough to prove themselves. There are 2 C. T. D. s with over a million miles and another thats real close(987,000 I think). I'm not going to even go into what I think of aluminum heads on a diesel:rolleyes: . Doug

The D-Max tag is on the driver side valve cover near the back and down low, it's hard to see ( they musta' been to embarassed to put it in plain view;) )

engines

now, i know that isuzu must make good diesels--but not in MY pickup. my happiness with the C8. 3 in the rollin' redneck residence was my primary reason in going with the ram. i did some pulling last w/e with both rigs. boy,do they like to pull!!! a friend drove the ram part of the time. i had him floor it once when he pulled away with about 6,000 lb in tow. my new exhaust system sounds awsome under load and acceleration!!:D :D :D

engine data tags

The engine data tag is on the top of timing gear cover on a Cummins, driverside valve cover on the powerjoke, the Isuzu(note japanese company)in the GM I don't know about but shouldn't be hard to find.

The "powerstroke" dt444 is not a powerstroke at all. It is a inline 6 cylinder about the same displacement as the powerstroke from a ford. It is a completely different motor and should not be compared to the powerstroke for the Ford.

Yes, the DT444 IS a non Ford bagded PSD. The only 2 inline 6s the International builds are a DT466 and a DT530. Sorry, FF1607, if you don't believe me look under the hood of your kids school bus. If its not older than 5 or so years it will be a DT444 V8 diesel complete with everything except the Powerstroke badging. Which just goes to show what the powerstroke is good for...
