46000 miles, fighting it for a month now. They couldn't really find anything out of ordinary except the computer showed primary fuel system failure. The problem would come and go, last week it was everyday this week the truck is behaving itself.

I wonder when the next one will die this time. If this is a common problem why isn't cummins doing anything about it? I will be installing gauges now.

When my pump finally went i brought it the dealer and showed them it had no fuel pressure with my gauge, they STILL gave me a hard time. I ended up buying it myself and doing it at home, i needed the truck right away and did not have time to deal with those jerks.

Silverbulletram- Do you have a test gauge? You don't have your location listed but maybe one of the members lives near you with a test gauge and you could/should check your fuel pressure.

Also, the LP is not supposed to set any codes because it is not part of the diagnostic/computer chain. If you're setting a code, even intermittently, mayhaps your VP44 is on the fritz? Either way you should check your FP for starters, many of us have had the LP go out anywhere from 0-35k miles and you have 40k+.

I have seen a bad lift pump set 5 codes non of them related to the lift pump. If I remeber correctly there is a code for the lift pump for the current draw being out of range. The lift pump gets it's power right from the ECM so if the electrcal side of the pump goes bad it can cause havoc with the ECM.

So maybe I'm wrong, but you're speaking strictly of the electrical side of the unit. If the unit is not pushing enough fuel, however, no codes are ever set for that. None were on mine and it was pushing <0 psi at WOT.

when I went through it with my truck and the dealer... they were looking for a lean code for the vp44... which one was never set.

So if the lp is bad enough, and your pulling hard enough, it seems you can set a lean code.

I didn't, part of the problem. . but after a few talks between me and the tech and phone calls to the star line by him. . he finally got an approval to replace the lp by DC/Cummins.

i live in dayton, ohio. I would assume if it was starving the vp44 that might would trigger a code. I know when it got into one of its moods it would choke and cough, The first code was p0230, primary fuel system failure, which would i think pinpoint it to the lift pump. The other 2 was waster gate and turbo system malfunction. Someone explained it to me, if it starves for fuel the turbo can't wind up and the waste gate can't open. The truck did it from time to time, not all the time. From what i understand these pumps can fail 2 ways, one by snapping the shaft in half or shorting out. I am pretty sure mine was a short out one. I emailed cummins and told them that a lot of people are tired of lift pump failures. Personally i don't think they care. It is pretty sad that we spend this kind of money on these trucks to only have them tear up several times before 100,000 miles.

test gauge

I have a Briar Hopper fuel pressure test gauge that's gathering dust if anyone's interested. Permanant gauges installed so it's now superfluous. PM me if you'd like it.

i think i am going to bite the bullet and put a set of gauges in it, mechanical not electrical... too much electric/computer stuff on it already. I trust mechanical over electric anyday.

Gary

KKaiser- Might want to hang on to your Briar gauge as a backup/confirmation gauge to confirm readings you see on your permanent gauge. That's what most of us are doing to rule out any problem w/ the sender or the gauge on the permanent setup when FP readings are questionable... .

zman,

Probably not a bad idea. I was, for once, trying to be domestically responsible and actually selling some thing. You see, I never get rid of anything, and after eighteen years at the same address, I can hardly move in my garage!! Guess I'll hold onto this too.

Kent

Kent- Actually I'm usually the opposite, I throw away or sell everything if I don't think I have a use for it. Good idea to hang onto the Briar gauge even after perm gauge install though, never hurts to have the ability to double check your perm gauge accuracy.
