FJfonda,

I love my 48re, it does exactly what I want it to. As long as I tow within the spec, it performs flawlessly... HECK, when I hook the beast to the sled, she STILL rocks. Now, if I went hog wild and spent 10 grand on motor mods, I'm sure I'd have to have the transmission worked over real good to handle the power. I have read over and over here that sub-400HP, the 48re will provide years of reliable service provided that you treat it right and run it by the book.

X,

Isn't the e40d a F0RD transmission? Whassup with that? Will it mate up?

Just my . 02

Good luck with the new truck!

Dean, I have 3. 73 gears and I almost always start in 2nd with no throttle, even pulling my 24' TT. And I'm not slipping the clutch at all. I can start in 3rd on level ground (empty) with no throttle too. First is nice for maneuvering, but hardly ever use it.

AndyMan,

thanks for the input..... I haven't owned an auto since my '66 polaris. My current truck is pretty much exactly what I want 90% of the time... except for noise. . but the last 10% is the problem. The last 10% is split between plowing, backing 12K in tight areas and towing the same in rolling hills with lottsa traffic to deal with. On my daily commute I don't think the auto will be as much fun.

I doubt that there is any problem launching in second and I am sure that most folks do. I just use first because of my own personal prefenence and belief that first is better, no other reason other than my own deep-seated old-fashioned ideas:) .

Hi Dean. Yea, I understand.

Blakers, same here-2nd for me all the time, except when I use third, when I'm already rolling. I just don't have the patience to start in first.

I do miss speed off the line with the autos, but there is something about the six shooter and the way it puts the power to the pavement immediately, no spool up or 1/2 second wait, it's all there right now!

I don't even bother racing anyone off the line cause I'd suck, but the 6 shooter is great

Even when I bought my 99, (White Obsession) I wanted an automatic, however after TDR educated me, I opted for the 5 speed because of the HP I wanted to run.

Since in introduction of the 48RE and a couple of conversations with Bill Kondolay (DTT), I went with the 48RE. Bill says that it is a much improved transmission over the 47RE, and should hold between 400 & 420 HP.

I am totally pleased with the 48RE! I like others basically have an office in my truck, and it is really nice not having to worry about shifting while on the phone. I have towed my 8000# travel trailer and it has performed flawlessly!

I have the 48RE and I'm lovin every shift of it! :D Oo. Oo.

This post makes me feel better about my trans decision, Thanks BIG BOB

I'm just the opposite at this point in time. I do not have anything bad to say about the 6spd trans. I have decided that I'm going to drag the truck and need to go with the auto trans. I'm very happy with the truck and don't want to deal with having to sell it and buy another truck. As you well know this is not a simple remove and install type of project by no means. If anyone is seriously wanting to do this transmission swap please pm me.

Thanks Chris

6speed rocks i have has them all also. no worries with the 6spd. let peter send you 3 of his clutches and you will be right at the price of what one fully bombed auto costs. one of the main reasons the stick is better for bombing is b/c of what peter can build you. i have has 99 auto, 03 spd and dad has 04 48re nice but will never go auto again. remember for me anyway there is a huge worry factor when you are putting 1000tq though it. ???????

If anyone is gonna "drag race" their truck and not tow, then they should have gotten a 1500 with a Hemi and 5-speed auto ... why would you get a diesel to drag race with????

Unless you'r towing school kids in a bus, diesels should be run with manuals.

Because it's different, completely unexpected.

Down here there are ricers who in their slammed civics with the noisy exhaust and "sporty" rims will not "try" a dually at a red light fearing they'll be humilated by some massive truck who's running a diesel of all things...

 some people... No creativity. . :)

hey nick - you go get your e40d and ill keep my ats stage iv which will blow that ferd transmission away! for the same price as that e4od transmission, you could do the mods to you 48re and have a transmission that could hold much more power, and be far more reliable in the long run! use your knowlege wisely! cya on im!

I love my 6 speed. In town it's a bit of a pain but I can live live that. I managed a 0-60 time of 10. 6 launching in 2nd at 2400rpm!! I wouldn't want to do that all the time but I was impressed.

Because if bombed right, they'll blow Hemis away!
