Competition launch

Competition slowed up on water/ methanol

Just thought that I would share that I won my first pull in the 7000lbs street class. 288ft on a stinkin hard and dry track. Couldnt get the tires to hook at all. Anything that I can do to gain some more traction for the next pull? I am running 45psi in the rear and 25psi in the front for tire pressure. 285/75-16 cooper STT's. I used 3rd in 4lo. Any suggestions?

I won again last night by 1 foot. I think a dual disc is in order. what one should I get? I was thinking the 3850 12cb. how would that work for street use?

I'd give Peter at South Bend Clutch a call. He can tell you the maners of most of them, and what to expect. I'd also keep in mind your HP and TQ goals when you order...

Exactly what I have in my truck for nearly two years now. Roughly 10-12 pulls on it and the good Lord only knows how many 3rd Gear burnouts! :-laf

Still driving everyday to work! :D ;)

does it shift ok at higher rpms? are they any different to install then a single disc?

Yeah it shifts fine at higher RPM's, but any way you cut it its definately slower. Seems to shift better @ higher RPM"s though. ;)

Personally I would only be able to guess its a little frustrating to stab 2 clutch disks plus a center plate! :-laf

I had previously installed 3 single disk clutches so I know how big a pain they are, when I acquired my DD I enlisted some friends that had already installed a few DD's to do the job for me. They had the transmission & x-fer case on the floor in less than 30 minutes. :-laf

We ran into a snag along the way that the input shaft wasn't spinning "freely" once installed. It puzzled us for quite some time, after talking with Peter @ SBC and JR Adkins we finally decided to try shimming the input with a piece of gasket material... ... GOLD! Worked like a charm! :D

Been great ever since!

I made my first pull two days ago. I wish I had similar results. Put on a pretty good smoke show... . too bad it was my clutch. Truck still stinks. Time to drop some cash.

I know everyone says go south bend, but my brother has an enterprise engine dual disk and it works great. There is more than just one clutch distributer.

I realize that and I made a call to Chuck at New Era Diesel. He custom makes dual disc clutches there also. He uses larger "ameoba" (sp?) style buttons on his for smoother engagement and the pressure plate has adjustable springs for the clamping load. Here is the part that either is good or bad: He can make them for either the 1 1/4" shaft or the 1 3/8" shaft. At what point does the stock input shaft on a 4500 break? Should I spend the money and get the upgrade kit and not have to worry or will the stock be ok for my situation. I am planning on getting to 600hp sometime here.

Yes there is more than one manufacture of DD clutches. Their is also Haisley Machine which makes a really good DD. I have two friends who were extremely competetive with their clutches. I just happen to have a used SBC land in my lap for the right price. ;)

The thing about the EEP DD's is that you will get tired of replacing floater plates. Do a search about them and you will find that its just like VP44's on 24V's..... "its not "IF" it breaks..... but "WHEN" it breaks. I've had a couple of personal friends who had EEP DD's. Both had to replace multiple floater plates.

South Bend just has the record for best customer service..... not to say Haisley's doesn't have good customer service... but I've never had to use theres. I just enjoy good conversation with them at pulls ;) :-laf

Also I believe SBC's is the least expensive to have rebuilt once it comes time to do so. ;)

I run an Enterprise clutch in my truck and I have gone through a couple of floater plates but the last one I got is a little different from the old ones, it does'nt have as many slots in it, and seems to be holding up quite a bit better. I also heard the newer style floaters are cryogenically treated, making it a little bit stronger and less proned to cracking/warping. Good thing, I turned one of those floaters into a soup bowl last year... ... :-laf

Justin,

my big issue right now is that I have a small input six speed and SBC will not build an "Iron Giant" with 1 1/4" hubs (I called and asked). I am not skerred of the input breaking but I guess they are. I will probably just keep rebuilding the Enterprise clutch for now.
