Just an idea, I haven't actually looked under my truck to see if this is even possible - but I was wondering if a large U bolt under the stock receiver that came up through the two holes in the bumper for the trailer balls would lend any support to the stock receiver? I know the rated hitch weight is woefully low and was looking for a little extra security. Just a thought, take it easy on me... .

Define "woefully low" given the fact that these are light duty trucks - regardless of the fact that they have the CTD engine.

Sorry, but that won't help, the stock receiver hitch is already tied into the bumper.

NVR FNSH - I think 350 pounds is "woefully low. " I can't tow more than my neighbor's purple Toyota RAV4 can without exceeding the limits of my stock receiver. I think most people (including my neighbor) would be shocked to find out that these trucks with the big diesels, big differentials, big transmissions and all of the other macho characteristics we all love, can barely do more than pull a couple of jetskis to the lake without aftermarket upgrades. I hate to answer your question with a question, but if you disagree that this is not a little surprising, what tongue weight would you define as "woefully low" given the overall context of these $40K "heavy duty" trucks?

Scrappy - Once I got home from work I took a look and it looks like that is the case. Oh well, just a thought. ;)

Is 350 lb in your owners manual? My 03 receiver is rated for 12K, and tongue weight of 1500 lb, though that may need to be weight distributing.

+1 on where did 350 lbs come from.

I believe the factory receiver on my '00 is rated for 1000lbs/10000lbs with weight distributing hitch. I believe the factory bumper is rated for 500lbs/5000lbs. I don't tow a tag trailer so don't quote me on the exact number.

they should put that on the tail gate then... "light duty" because mine says HEAVY DUTY. I had no idea that 350 pounds was the limit. I could almost hold that myself hangin out the back of the bed with rope tied around my ankels. I guess I should get a tatoo that says heavy duty. :D

After I bought my truck I went out and got a big adjustable triple-ball hitch that weighs around 35 pounds all by itself. Little did I know that the hitch with nothing on it would use the first 10% of my tongue weight. :-laf
