Ideas for a MN Charity Dyno Day

11253hp Was the grand HP total this year. How can we use this to our advantage? Say $5 per truck dyno'ed goes to xxxx Charity? That seems kind of small. $150 would be nice, but not "worth" the trouble. I'd like to find a way to get more people, and give more the community. Say $75 per dyno run and $25 goes to charity? That's a bit more like it. But in the eyes of the community still small money at $750



What Charity? St Judes is local, and would possibly get Radio coverage as well as a possible "bump" from them. K102 has in the past doubled the donation that has been raised.



The other thought being... . This could get much bigger than it already is should we get the community involved. This could also make or break the immage of Diesels in the communitys eyes.



So guys... . What suggestions do you have? I have never done anything like this before. I'd love to see this grow into a huge multi-event weekend. Obviously this would be an undertaking, but well worth it.

ya know, what would be cool is to get a local Diesel Dyno, and get a local radio station or celebrity to pay a dollar for every lb of torque laid down that day. Would be pretty sweet. Maybe get a local dealer or something to finance the event... I bet you could get some crazy money and have a great time doing it as well.

We could do it as a group scholarship for someone attending diesel tech school as well...



I agreed to pledge 1000 each year to my wifes college for someone going into law enforcement in her memory and the college matches my pledge. I get a real nice letter and plaque from the student who wins it.



What about using the proceeds as a pledge for Toys for Tots and get the radio stations involved? Or give to the local homeless shelter? I dont see alot of that around here but it exists in the twin cities. Just think about how cold it is outside right now and how many homeless people would die to spend one night indoors with a warm meal... . not all these people are homeless by choice!



The only big conflict I foresee is getting enough trucks on the dyno if it is promoted because look how long it took for the trucks that did run Saturday. Might be some ****** off people if they drive there just to dyno and cant get on the rollers. I would think we would need at least another dyno and get 50 trucks to roll at 75 bucks with 25 going to charity. We would want to contact the local churches because they will match funds too. We could get as much as 5000 dollars raised in one event! Any amount for a charity is a blessing! Thank you Andy for the wonderful idea!

We have done a charity dyno day here in Colorado for 3 years now and plan to do our 4th in the spring. We usually raise right around $3,000.



We are very fortunate in that our local dyno shop really gets into it too. They donate their dyno for the whole day, so that every dime of dyno run charges go to the charity. We usually charge $30-40 for 3 good runs and last year we dynoed 67 trucks. I get club members to donate their time throughout the day (make a schedule) to come help out hooking/unhooking trucks and keeping things moving smoothly. I run the registration booth and all the paperwork (liability and information forms). This way, the shop really only has to have 1 guy from their shop to run the dyno and basically be in charge (although the owner is always there as well).



The other thing we do is ask businesses to donate items and we have a prize drawing. That brings in quite a bit of money right there. We go to diesel performance businesses, as well as local restaurants and shops. We get all kinds of different donated items, from chips/tuners, exhaust sytems, gift certificates to t-shirts and hats. We usually charge $2 for each ticket or 3 for $5.



One more thing is we have food there (usually a vendor cart), as well as local businesses come out and set up booths (I just ask for a donation for the drawing in exchange for letting them set up a booth). Hooters girls usually come out and the guys get their pictures taken with their trucks and Hooters girls for a small donation. The local truck dealerships always bring out their new trucks for display (and donate some things to the drawing). The last 2 years we've even had a local dentist donate trophies for highest hp and tq, as well as best in show (I forgot we have a truck and car show at the same time too).



It is a lot of work, but works out great and is a lot of fun. We've donated money to a local foster care association, Hospice and Children's Hospital. I have all the club members (from both clubs) vote on which charity we work for each year.



You can give me a shout if you want to talk in more detail about it. After 4 years of doing this, I have definitely seen what works and what doesn't and would be more than happy to help ya out.

Being we just had our annual dyno event it will be around a year before we make another run at it. That will also give us enough time to gather things together. 67 trucks... that's amaizing! 2 dynos? Gotta be... man that's flyin!



I think I'll get in touch with someone I know from the local radio station and see if he has any adivse as to how to get them involved. After all Every little bit helps!



If we did Toys For Tots, Not only could we do a Monitary donation, people that just come to watch could bring a toy to donate.

Just one dyno is all we ever have. The one we do our charity dyno at is a pull through shop, so that makes it go so much quicker. Plus we assign everyone a job. One guy just goes around with black spray paint and the tape and gets the harmonic balancer all ready. Then we have guys all the way around the truck to strap it down and one guy to hook up the sensor to the balancer (which as I said is all ready at this point), then another guy that runs the dyno. We have somebody there to record the results, one on a computer and one on a big white piece of paper outside so everyone can see. Then the guys all around the truck unstrap the truck and get it outta there. The next truck is all ready to go right on the dyno. We keep the line moving and it flows real well. All paperwork is handled outside the dyno shop at the registration table, so the guys in the shop just deal with the truck, no papers and no money.



It works out great.



You are smart to start working on it. We will probably do ours in April or May and the formal planning will start no later than January.

Any idea how Hi-techs new dyno is going to be setup in the new shop? I know its going to be in the floor, but it be sweet if its a drive through like shay says they use, it would make it a ton quicker.



Another good idea, maybe next time we have a dyno day, let everyone know that they should put a shot of black paint on one spot on the balancer, so when they get there, we can hit them with a white paint marker, would make it very quick (plus paint marker sticks better than tape! )





All in all, I like the ideas. Personally, I like the idea of the October Dyno day, and that it should be the charity day event. Reason for that is, it would be a perfect time of year for the Toys for Tots program. A little early, but not by much more than a couple weeks. Channel 11 (KARE11) is really big on Toys for Tots and would be all over the event I would be guessing. Also, I could see if I could get ahold of Paul Brand, he hosts Auto Talk on KSTP AM1500 on Saturdays, maybe they would be into adding this to thier day? Be pretty cool.

I'm not worried about local media coverage. I think that will be easy enough.



Today I am going to talk to a lady from St Judes. Ironically she happens to have her car worked on where I work. I will also get in touch with the Toys for Tots people and talk to them.



Their new set up will not be drive through, but Drive on. They will have a large picture window with stadium style seating for our viewing pleasure.

Just a thought

This may sound dumb but what the hell...



I’m sure there’s some guys out there aren’t that mechanically sound and may be intimidated by doing some mods or bigger repairs on their trucks. These members also may be willing to pay to have this done but can’t afford current shop rate.



I’m thinkin that there’s gotta be a few members that would be willing to donate their services to help out another member for a good cause.



Why not do mods and such along w/dyno runs, and have the owner of the truck donate the $ that they can afford for the mods/repairs for the charity.



I know I would cough up some coin to have a few extra hands to help change out my oil pan. Big dent grrr

I like the idea Tom, although I do think an Oil pan would be a bit much. I could see Timing, Governor Spring, Injectors, etc things like that working out quite nicely.

to do the oil pan you have to lift the motor in the truck in order to clear the cross member. or pull the transmission. not somthing i would like to do in a parking lot.

Andy, I have a bar bent especially for lifting the motor to swap the oil pan. I have knocked out 2 in my truck and done 3 for other people in this area. I did the last one in less than 2 hours with a helper and my oldest girl fetching beer. It must be an Iowa thing because I havent seen many posts on changing the pans out. Both mine happened from falling in the same stinking hole crossing a river hauling grain wagons out 2 years in a row... . had a dozer fix that this spring!



Josh, some of these more major things can be accomplished with the right people attending the task, however I think the people with skills would feel a burden due to the fact they would be doing most of the work. The oil pan thing should be a deal on the side... Ill buy beer and food if you come to my house and help me. Now injectors and delivery valves and turbos wouldnt be too bad if people dont expect them done while the engine is hot. Remember Jim changed out pumps at last years event to run a second time on the rollers. Personally I think we should stick to just donating extra money for the runs on the dyno for charity and not do any bombing for charity because you as well as some others do this for income. Perfect example of dont bite the hand that feeds you!
