Hey guys, this has come up a few times lately.

Now we are working on an FAQ for 1st Gens, and we are working on a "How to", for us as well...

What I'd like to see is ideas/items/sequencing for what we could call "Stage 1", "Stage 2", Stage 3", "Off The Sanity Map Stage",,,

Put together some ideas, kick it around come up with a sequencing and post em here, we can hash it out, and agree on each one and then do maybe a sticky post...

Above all, lets try to make it a bit towards generic as well... if we start waving pom pom's it'll get testy, I know the moderator in here... ;)

Stage 1

Less restrictive air filter... . several choices out there from K&N to the Old Smokey mount

Less restrictive exhaust... . anything from straight piping stock size to 8" dia stacks like Seans.

Turbo exhaust housing change... . 16 cm, 14, etc.

Pump tweaks... . rotating the eccentric, smoke screw, power screw adjustments, gov adjustments, timing advances.

Stage 2

Gages should be the first step in stage 2 ... . pyro, boost, tach if needed, transmission temp for the 'clutch impaired'.

Auto transmission mods... . someone else needs to elaborate here/

Injectors POD, Bosch 185, 370 marine, etc.

Stage 3

Turbo upgrade..... PDR Hx35, hybrid as some have done, head mods or upgrade, cam, serious pump tweaks or upgrade,

Insanity Stage

See Nascar Mark!

Is that ok for starters?? Add, subtract, cut, etc. I'm sure I missed a bunch.

STAGE 1- Take the wife to dinner and a show.

STAGE 2- Take the wife to dinner, a show and bring up the idea of refinancing the house.

STAGE 3- Call for a family meeting and tell them we need to simplify our lives, we will be moving into a smaller house and tell the childern that not everone can go to college.

STAGE 1: Minimum of a pyrometer and boost gauge, different air filter, different exhaust(freer flowing, larger).

STAGE 2: Different injectors, advanced timing, housing change on turbo, pump tweaks, and of course also STAGE 1 to go with this.

STAGE 3: REAL big injectors (POD's or custom), larger intercooler, Maybe larger fuel lines, rotary injection pump work, Modified HX-35, an HX-40, or twins. Propane or nitrous. Then probably driveline Mods(transmission work for you auto guys and bigger clutches for the manuals.

I think that these are pretty good stages. I still wish there was a little more power to get easily out of these old girls. It seems that all that is offered is the same from each company.

Stage one: guages Pyro, Tach, Boost, etc. Stage two: baseline figures: egt rpm boost pressure; change air filter to after market or bhaf, open up the exhaust(loose muffleror put on larger system), advance timing, tweek pump. Stage three: larger injectors, better turbo, cam shaft, headwork, upgrade automatic trani or clutch if standard. drugs if you really need them and a second mortage on the homestead:D

Stage 1-

Gauges: pryo, boost, tach & trans temp if auto. Get them out of the way early so you have base line readings from the beginning.

Stage 2- 30-40 HP gain?

Stage 1 +

Air box mods, BHAF or other high flow less restrictive air filter.

Smaller exhaust housing- 16, 14 or 12 depending on your needs

AFC adjustments.

Stage 3- 50-60 HP gain?

Stage 1,2+

Exhaust- 3. 5" or 4" mandrel bent, muffler optional. Stacks

High Idle adjustment to 2900-3000rpm

Full power screw adjustments

Good for up to 60hp?

Stage 4- 70-100 HP gain?

Stage 1,2,3+

Larger injectors

Timing

Transmission upgrade for Automatics

Stage 5- HP gain? (last of the current bolt on options)

HX35 or PDR35

other bolt on options:

ADT manifold

Banks intercooler

Pier's Cam

Performance built pump

Head porting

Stage 6-

What stage is this:

215 hp P pump (-913) conversion, #10 TST plate, gov and AFC work

ported head

DD cam

370 marine injectors

Pius balanced HX40

4" exhaust, BD remote mounted brake

Maybe Stage 4 (400 usable hp).

I know about a "worthy" first gen Ram that is undergoing this "slight upgrade" now, and getting a NV4500 Standard Trans conversion too.

Some Rams just keep getting better with age :D

Stage I

Gauges - EGT, tach, boost and trans temp for auto transmission. Let her breath air in exhaust out. I'll be trying out a "Green Performance Air Filter" at my next oil change and it will replace my K&N. I do an oil analysis at each oil change so I will let you know what my numbers are. You can also do pump tweaks in Stage I - star wheel turn up the power reset the idle and adjust smoke.

Stage II

Injectors and turbo hot side 16cm or 14cm wastegated. Re-tune pump to get best performance or install a "built" pump. Tune for efficency

Stage III

Call Piers - cold side turbo - cam. Here is where you can go all out depending on what you want for power.

:D :D

stage 1,stage2,

Hello, this all sounds real good, I myself, wanted more power NOW, so I tweaked my pump first, then I got the BUG, I needed more power, lost the muffler and added a bhaf,Oh Ya, but I wanted more, then the 16cm2 housing, Great, but to loud,so I added a 4 in straight pipe to the rear, Very Good, I changed the timing, twice, and tweaked the pump, I still need more, Hey this is fun, Then I added the gauges and tach,I did the cheap stuff first, hope it will help:) JoeOo.

TTT,

Come on guys, keep em coming... ...

We need as many ideas as possible... once we have as many options/ideas as there are going, we'll compile/edit/repost...

Even some "home brew" mods are fair game here... so don't be shy... .

Recipe for happy truck and marriage

Stage 1: Start on a case of favorite brewed beverage

Stage 2: Get online with wife's credit card. Order gauges, exhaust housing, better air filter, and larger exhaust. Tweak star wheel, and AFC screw

Stage 3: Share case of beverage with wife before she sees the first credit card bill. Add injectors, transmission/clutch upgrades. Play with main power screw to control mosquito populations, but not cause blackouts.

Stage 4: PDR toys, HX-35, cam, ATS exhaust manifold, Banks twin ram intake, port/polished head

Stage 5: Talk wife out of filing for divorce. Tell her you really do lover her more than the truck (white lies don't hurt once in a while) Buy a second gen with a P-Pump and swap engines then add a stoopid pump to it with previous BOMB from 1st gen engine. Let wife drive the truck just once.

Jeremy

Jeremy, you putz..... you forgot "... . add nasty butt auto from our favourite fluid coupling man... " then you won't need a silly NV or clutch... . :):D:D:D

You know, if I put a good set of Hadleys or Grovers in the truck I be the Mrs. would let me do pretty much anything ..... she just HATES that lame horn... .

bob.

Hey Bob,

Let me elaborate, transmission/clutch upgrade means adding your foavorite auto mods and TC, or a NV4500 and tweaked out clutch. I forgot to mention, to have the ultimate 1st gen, you need a "pair" of rubber masculine related items hanging under the rear hitch:D to go with the air horns.

Jeremy

Stage One:

Install gauges,Tach,Boost,Pyro,Trans.

Stage Two:

Install free flowing aftermarket air filter, change turbo size

if needed, install 4" exhaust with large, straight through design

muffler.

Stage Three:

Upgrade transmission to handle horsepower increase.

Stage Four:

Install larger injectors, tweak fuel pump, advance timing.
