I had a problem w/ low idle about a year ago and used the instructions found on this forum to adjust it up to specs. About 2 years later I'm having the same trouble but now when I adjust the idle screw it seems the engine "compensates" within a few seconds and sends it back down again. I've read every "idle'" post I can find but no help. ..... any thoughts??

Thanks

Steve

I don't see in your sig what kind of transmission you have. The first thing I would check are the linkage springs. The spring between the pump lever and the block is actually two springs wrapped together. If one of the spring ends has worn or rusted away, then only one of the springs is actually working.

Check the linkage rod to see if it is loose or adjusted wrong so that the idle screw does not touch the stop.

If your transmission is an auto, check to see if the spring on the kick down lever is missing or broken.

Joe G;

I have the 47RE.

I had the throttle linkage recall done last year and the tech said I had the idle problem then but wanted $175. to diagnose it. I figured I could fix it with the idle screw... but no

When I screwed the idle screw in the idle increased for about 10 sec then lowered itself. I did this twice figuring maybe it backed out or something but it became apparent that the something else was automatically re-adjusting it so I stopped. I think this means that the screw is touching the stop.

You mentioned checking the linkage rod for loose /adjustment... . throttle linkage? the one in the recall? Would they have to correct it when installing the ball ends or just try and soak you $175. to diagnose what they already know?

Is the kickdown spring is the one next to the kickdown band adj. ? I usually remove it to adj the band when I service the trans. (155,000 on the trans. so far)

Thanks in advance

The linkage must be adjusted correctly during the recall installation. It sounds like it was done wrong to me. There is nothing that will automatically reset the idle on a mechanical injection pump like the P7100 if the idle screw is really touching the stop. The length of the throttle rod adjustment is used to set the TPS. If it is done incorrectly it can lift the idle screw off the stop. If that happens adjusting the idle screw won't help. So try makeing the throttle rod longer and see what happens.

The only other thing that could possible pull the throttle linkage is the cruise control. That's easy to check. Just unhook the cruise control cable from the throttle linkage on the pump.

Yes, that's the kick down spring near the kickdown cable adjust.

The low idle problem existed prior to haveing this work done.....

Will do... . sounds like a winner

will do. currently the cruise works as it should.

Thanks a lot for the advice Joe G
