Hi All - brand new owner and member. I've heard that it would be beneficial to have two gadgets:

1)Shut down timer - 1 to 5 minutes

2) Raise RPM to ~1100 when idling

What does everybody think, and if you agree, what units are the best buy?

a shut down timer is a waste of money IMO. these trucks cool off as fast as you can let off the throttle. unless you pull in off the interstate and shut the truck off while you are still rolling you shouldnt need one.

a high idler is essential IMO. leaving the truck idle (at stock RPM's) is detrimental to our engines. worse in cold weather.

I don't have a shutdown timer so can't comment on that, but I do have a Practical Solutions High Idler, it is a good unit, easy to install, and quality is top rate, as is all their products, check them out at:

I shut-down @ 300* pre turbo manually.

My high idler is a Special custom Cummins high idler device.

(a wooden 2" dowel cut to the correct length to provide 1400rpm when placed between the throttle pedal and the seat frame):D

Adjustable Fast Idle Controller

My fast idle unit is very similar to Shovelhead's, but not so expensive. I used a piecie of one inch trim about 14 inches long and place it on the throttle pedal and the front of the seat. The engine speed is adjusted by using the electric seat switch in the forward motion unitl the desired speed is achieved. Works every time and stores under the seat until needed again. Cost... less than a dollar and handy to spank the kids with as well. :p

Thanks guys - I'm going to try Double 6's suggestion. Just ordered one overnight. I'll report on installation and accuracy. Also, how do you list your truck at the bottom of a reply? Do you have to type it every time?

On a stick truck there is a ton of room under the cover for the APPS and levers. I just took a old high idle solenoid of a Q-Jet and mounted it on a piece of aluminum which went under two APPS mounting bolts. A little wire, a switch and a fuse holder I was in business. I had all the stuff already so I'm not sure of the total cost but it would be much. At 1200 RPM it'll maintain 180* or so even at -20*.

I've considered getting a turbo cool down timer.

Once every couple of weeks, I have to drive up some twisty roads at high altitude. 9-10,000 ft. Even though I am only going 45mph, unloaded, it will take at least 5 minutes for the turbo to cool down to 350. Even in the dead of winter!

Under "normal" conditions, I agree, the turbo cool down timer is not really necessary.

I have the Practical Solutions high idler and it works great. I got it after I got tired of fooling with the Stick and Seat method. But I don't really use it as much as I thought I would. When it's cold out (20f or less), if I am trying to warm things up faster, the high idle seems to worsen the quantities of nasty smelly white smoke.

Another interesting feature of the P. S. High Idler... If you leave it on and try to drive, it acts like a valet switch. Full throttle is like half throttle.
