I have a 1991 non-intercooled, five speed, fuel screw turned in, cone ground, timing advanced, 3200 governor spring. Before I installed the governor spring I could put the truck in first gear and idle up my steep driveway. It was almost impossible to stall the truck. After installing the spring the idle is sometimes high and sometimes so low that it dies. Now if I let the clutch out with no throttle on flat ground the truck stalls. Other than the idle and no low end torque the truck runs fine. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on how to fix it? Help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Welcome to the site!

Did you try to adjust the lever indexing to the throttle shaft? Other than that, I don't have any bright ideas.

Hopefully one of our pump gurus will wander by and give some sage advice. ;)

Sounds like your throttle bushing may be getting worn, allowing your throttle to pull on the governor with differing tension each time it comes to rest. Is it leaking around there? Lack of a leak doesnt necessarily mean lack of slack, though.

Another option is the springs inside getting tired and weak after 17 years and who knows how many miles. May be time to drop some cash for a pump refresh.

Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure I have the throttle index in the right spot, I have been messing with that a lot. I will try to replace the bushing. By "pump refresh" do you mean full rebuild or just new springs. Also is that bushing still available at the dealership. Thanks again for the advice it is much appreciated.

DO NOT buy pump stuff at the Dodge dealer unless you just like peeing away money (If that's the case, send me the money, I'll get your parts, and keep the difference/ profit). Your local Bosch dealer is your best source for pump/ injector parts.

The bushing upgrade kit is about $100 last I checked, and requires some in depth removal and disassembly of the pump top. If you can rebuild an engine, transmission, or rear end, you're in the clear. KEEP IT CLEAN!!! I cant stress this enough. You should use a bottle of hand cleaner (without the grit) and LOTs of blue paper towels to do this job.

By "refresh" I meant seals and springs. My definition of a full rebuild is starting with a bare case/ top and shaft, and replacing everything else inside. The refresh shouldnt be more than $100. So, you will have at the most $250 and be good to go another 300K.

I've done a lot of mechanic work so it shouldn't be a problem. I'll start with the bushing kit because the truck ran fine before the new governor spring which leads me to believe the pump is okay. Thanks.
