Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Idle Skip - After the Engine is Warm

OK, I looked through the history a little bit but it seemed every time someone had a similar symptom they never posted what the fix was. My 2001 has a skip at idle after it is warmed up, usually the first time I drive it for the day it is fine, if I shut it down after it is up to temperature for 5-10 minutes and then start it back up it has a skip. Also it is definantly worse on hot days. There are no codes showing up, the fuel pressure is running 15 psi at idle and 10 psi on WOT, I replaced the cam position sensor but the didn't fix it. How about some brilliant educated been there done that answers to my problem. The truck is bone stock and has 40,000 miles on it. Thank you in advance

I don't know if this will help or not, but I had a rough idle - kind of a stumble every so often. It turned out to be a malfunctioning solenoid in the VP-44. Since the solenoid isn't replaceable by itself, they put in a NEW VP-44 and the problem was solved.

Was finally able to get the truck into the shop last Friday but it has been cooler around here for the last week or so and the symptom hasn't been showing itself. Seems it needs to be 80 degrees or more outside for it to happen. Guess I need to wait for it to happen again and bring it to the shop right then, maybe they'll be able to get it in. On a brighter note, I am dealing with the dealer where I bought the truck which is a ford dealer so they don't know how to work on the truck so it goes over to Diesel Fuel Systems in Bangor which is a really good shop, so if the symptom shows itself I know they can figure it out.

i went through almost the same conditions you describe on a 1999. i live in nh. call my cell # 1 609 284 1901 i'll try and walk you through it . or depending where in maine you are i can drop in.

I had it and it went away. A couple of things to look for. I used an injector cleaner for several tank fulls in a row and believe that is what "fixed" mine. Also, I asked a dodge and drof wrench about it and he told me to be very carefull about a stuck or leaky injector. If the injector is stuck open it will leak fuel into the cylinder and wash the oil down and the piston may lock up. I did several oil samples and everthing was fine on the fuel dilution.

Had the same problems as your truck. Used some diesel fuel conditioner on the "strong" side to clean the injectors. I did this on a trip from Alb. NM to Chicago. After arriving in Chi-town, the miss was gone. Good luck!

Mine did the same thing. It kind of hiccupped evry once and a while. There is a TSB on it, as well as a reflash. I had mine reflashed, and the problem was corrected.

IAT Sensor

The problem is your IAT Sensor is dirty/or plugged up. When it is cold the sensor reads cold and tells the EMC to advance the timming and give more fuel. Thus, engine runs smoother. . When the engine is hot, the IAT sensor tells the ECM the engine it is hot and to retard the timming and lean down the fuel causing a stumble or skip as you call it.



Trust me this is the answer... . No charge for the trouble shooting!!!
