Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Idle Speed

I had something interesting happen yesterday, and I don't know if it's good or bad. After cruising down the highway here for at least 15-30 miles and coming to a little town and having to stop, my idle was 100 rpm higher than what it usually is. Is this something to be concerned with or am I just being a little paranoid? Now if I shut it off and restart it, it will idle at the 800 rpm like normal.

Ben, I'm getting the same thing, did you ever get it figured out?

Mine has done the same thing a couple of different time. I always accounted it to possibly the AC compressor running in a defrost cycle, and kicking up the RPM 100. Not sure but it sounds good Better than a VP problem

I still haven't figured it out. I may call a Cummins shop and run it by a tech.

Mine did that several times before the APPS started to die. Eventually, it would run to about 1000 rpm at idle when warmed up. It took about 20K miles to start to leave me stranded. I reset it several times, but eventually bought a new one.



Never had a high idle again after replacing the apps. It never set a code until my pedal died the first time. The high idle never set any codes by itself.

Worth a try before spending $$$ for a new one.

Ben,



it is a potetiometer (sp?) that tells the computer how far the accerator is depressed. It's an accerator pedal position sensor or some such thing.
