Curious if anyone else has had this problem before.

My brothers 2001 automatic has developed a surge at idle and dies when you put it in drive or reverse. The surge usually only happens in the first 30 sec. after starting before it smoothes out, but as soon as you put in gear it dies. You can drive it if you pump the throttle when you put it in gear and it actually drives good but will die as soon as you come to a stop if left in drive.

He changed the fuel filter, did the air bleed procedure, and checked all wire connections for fit, checked fuel lines, put a diesel additive for possible water in the tank. He also disconnected the batteries for few minutes thinking it might be a computer issue. The fuel pump is working but don't have a pressure guage.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

A good place to start

He should check for codes. Either have it done at a shop or cycle the ignition key 3 times and record codes on the odometer screen.

Thanks but he took it to the dealer today and they said that both the lift pump and the injection pump are bad. They want $3100 to fix it and relocate the pump to the tank. I think he is going to go get it and take it to a well known perfprmance diesel shop near by.
