You are correct. Ammonia is much too dangerous in its pure form. Otherwise, it would still be universally used as a domestic refrigerant in refrigerators and air conditioners.

thanks for the correction, but as far as refrigerators go, the absorption refrigeration cycle isn't as energy efficient as the compressor type of cooling systems, when used with electricity.
the units require a vent to the outside when used with a gas or oil flame. the cost of the gas line and vent keeps the units from being used in main stream housing. they are still used in all r. v. 's and remote locations. most large commercial cooling systems still use ammonia as a heat transfer medium.
and yes it is hazardous...

The Urea used for DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) actually doen not have "something added" what it has is "something removed". Urea in it's dry granular form is a very common agricultural fertilizer. It is commonly sold as 46-0-0. Urea when it is produced for the AG industry has thin coating of Urea Formadehyde added to the outside which helps "coat" each individual grannual and helps prevent it from fracturing or otherwise breaking down. The problem is when the UF coated agricultural grade Urea is used in the DEF industry, it causes problems with your system. Don't be tempted to run down to your local farm and feed store to buy a bag of Urea fertilizer to mix with water and pour in your truck - it'll cost you money.

There are Urea manufacturers that have to tool up to make small runs of "uncoated" or UF free urea to go into this DEF market - which costs money. I suspect that the DEF market is 1/100th of a percent of the overall Urea market when compared with the Agricultural industry.

the main thing to remember, government involvement = more $$$ to do anything...
i would like to set the clock back about 30 years, but with the exception of the lead in the fuel...
that goes for all other taxes as well.

thanks for all of the information about urea.
the people on this site always have sources of good info...
