Through my last post about the broken sensor, turns out to be and IAT sensor, I kinda got the feeling that the K&N filter is not the greatest thing since sliced bread that I thought it was when I bought it. OK more expensive experience. The question then is "Which one". Lets hear what the rest of you use.

I seem to remember someone testing several and finding that the stock air box is as good as anything else up to about 400 hp? If you've added <75hp you may just want to spend your money on something else.

I have a Scotty III but it really didn't make a difference on my mostly stock truck.
 
I can speak from experience. K&N air filters can and will destroy your engine. I had
one on my 88 Landcruiser. The inside of the intake tube was full of sand. They
filter out virtually nothing. Cummins will void your warranty if they find out you have one.
The test mentioned above was done by Diesel Power magazine. They found that
after market air boxes give no increase in horsepower. There is an article in TDR
that explained why. You should be able to find it in the search forums section.
Stick with the Mopar air filter and spend your cash on something else.
 
Mod the airbox like the PSMBuick style. Then add an Amsoil EAA drop in filter or the new style Fleetguard filter.
 
Can't go wrong with the OEM stock air filter. I too used the K&N filter on my 95 until I found out what it can do to the engine.
 
My son had a K&N on his 06, he had to scrub the inner cooler and all associated plumbing out due to dirt/grit being plastered everywhere... ... After seeing that I'm now a fan of dry filtration... .
 
I would check with airaid and afe. I seem to remember that a lot of the "restriction" is in the baffled tube between the filter housing and turbo. I also seem to remember one of these companies offers just the replacement tube between the two. That will allow you to use either a stock or aftermarket filter (your choosing) and allow a little better airflow between filter and turbo.
 
mallen1 the tube is not a restriction. the fins in the elbow are straightening vanes to reduce side shear in the turbo. diesel power and tdr also covered this. the best thing to do is to add the psm kit and use the new mopar filter. we changed our boxes out with ones off of 6. 7's to use there filters. about a month after we changed the last one mopar came out with the new filter that fits the 5. 9 box.
 
The stock airbox with the PSM mod and either the NEW Mopar filter OR an Amsoil drop in seems to be a good choice for most people. I had that setup with the Amsoil nano filter for the first couple years and it did a good job filtering, my oil sampling had good results. I went to the Amsoilnano because the stock drop in filter was doing an OK job but not as good as I would have liked it to do.



Now I have an Ice Box intake box, am using the Amsoil nano and a pre-filter, my oil sampling says I am filtering better than all the previous filtering before with the stock box and eventhe Amsoil nano drop in.



Since you have the K&N tubing, I would suggest the Amsoil nano to fit your tubing diameter and a pre-filter. I believe Amsoil offers the pre-filters to fit their filters or you can get them from Outerwears.

Thank you Louis. I had a diesel shop tell me the K&N I bought was junk too. I'm not too proud to listen to what makes sense. I am going to the dealer on the way home and pick up the update filter. They quoted $31. 70 in Bellevue, WA.

Hopefully NAPA/WIX will start making one just like it.
