Not as significant as that story, but I've been known to buy soldiers dinners from time to time, and when I was in Oceanside Ca, we arrived at a Mexican Restaurant were three Marines (in uniform) were just finishing their meal, and I over heard the waitress explaining she could take multiple credit cards. I then told them I would take care of the bill and thanked them for their service and they accepted my offer and thanked us as they left. The waitress later explained that they were broke and were trying to figure out how they were going to pay the bill, by the way, it was only $38.00. It's amazing how little they get paid for the ultimate sacrifice they may have to make some day.

When the people came home from serving in Nam, they weren't treated as they are now. But that was another era and different society then. But each year the guys I spent a year in the Vietnam jungle with meet just to say hi. Last weekend was our yearly meet. During that time, a lady and her daughter happen to be in the same restaurant for dinner. The young girl said she hear we were vets and gave us each a hug and thanked us for our service and glad we were home. She said her father died while servicing in Afghanistan. Just that hug and thank you meant more to us than could ever be imagined. We made it home, but this sweet considerate child's father didn't and she will have an empty place in her heart the rest of her life. It's been a few days since that chance meeting, but I still see her face and that smile as if it was minutes ago. That was the first time this group of guys nor I couldn't say anything. I don't think we'll ever forget her.

Rule 1 People die

Rule 2 Nobody can change Rule 1

Family's are left to bare the burden of the loss, that's the sad part. Military Members know what can happen when they serve its a choice, NOW!!

Yes, now days it's a volunteer service. I thank everyone that commits to this. But when I went in, I actually had a choice, go in or not. There were two guys I personally knew, when drafted, they paired up and headed north to Canada to hide. Never knew what happened to them. Yet they still had a choice. I was asked to join them if I wanted to, but didn't. Now looking back, technically I and others like me were drafted ... morally ... were we ? We had a choice, didn't we ?

I was drafted but chose to take a test for the Navy and the Air Farce and when both called after telling me that they had a 2 year waiting list I went to enlist in the Air Farce. I was thinking about running to Canada but with both Parents being Pearl Harbor Survivors I had second thoughts, Had I known that the Pri*ks would have revived amnesty I think my choice would have been different, both parents when they came to Germany to see me after my shaving accident in Viet Nam caused the loss of a leg they said that Canada would have been a better choice. Not angry about it but Nam Vets were swept under the rug, we were disgusting POS in most peoples eyes and weren't worth a pinch of **** anyway. Not until it became popular with the celebs did we receive any notice. The ONLY reason the celebs thought about us was that it got their name in the headlines of the newspapers and on TV as being a Good Guy.

The point to this post is that the REAL hero's are the ones left at home taking care of family. I choke up every time I see a Military Dad surprise his family with a come home surprise, that is the real joy to war coming home and taking care of the little ones and wife that waited NOT KNOWING!!!
