If your 04.5 cat fell off, would EGT be less?

If your cat fell off would your EGT be less,... especially if you happen to have a performance box on your rig? If that has happened to someone,... do you happen to know how much help that would provide on EGTs??

When mine fell off I noticed only about a 50 deg. or so WOT drop with cat off and 4" straight through muffler, but the egt's did climb a bit slower!

The Cat and the muffler need to hit a bump and fall off

When my cat fell off I only noticed about 50 degrees although when the stock muffler fell off and went to a banks 30" muffler I dropped about 250-300 degrees

CAT

That's a great decrease to be attributed to just a muffler. I hope mine does as well. When my cat falls off I intend to put a aeroturbine muffler right where the cat is and run straight pipe back to my duals. I can't wait to see what difference that will make to EGT reduction.

Daytripper,

How do you get that truck through the California emissions inspections with no cat? I'm thinking of doing that to mine but after I retire I'm gonna wind up back in California and don't want the state inspectors gigging me on that. Where is your EGT probe to where you noticed a 250-300 degree drop? How does the truck sound with the Walker muffler installed?

Banks is using a Walker muffler?

EGT probe is pre turbo and muffler has minor 2000 rpm drone not as bad as some trucks I have been in.

Thinking about trying donaldson 51" muff next

And no emmissions checks on diesel light trucks in Cal. (yet)

Kept cat just in case

You can remove the cat, cut it open, remove the guts. Then weld it back up with the weld on top, facing the floor of the truck. Stick it back in the exhaust system and it looks like you still have a legal cat.

Muffler removal / replacement will help greatly too.

MPG without CAT

mattymac / DayTripper,

Did you guys see any increase in mpg after you hit those bumps and lost your cats?

When I did the above redings I had my edge EZ installed on p. u. and noted with cat removed and stock muffler EGTs (remember this is on Calif. truck) would still hit 1200 but took a little longer to get there but after new muffler install I very very rarely ever hit 1000 1050 degrees usually only hit around 900 950 and my foot only knows two positions, even when towing 10,000lb 5er I would ony hit 1100 1150 on hard hills with pedal on floor
