I just bought a 99 Quad Cab. Nice truck except for one problem. The previous owner had some trouble with the ignition switch and had it replaced. Now the truck has one key for the door and one for the ignition. This really irritates me and if I have to I will replace everything so I only have one Key. I have enough the way it is. Plus I will always be grabbing the wrong one for sure.

Is it cheaper to buy new door locks with keys to match the new ignition? The local stealer (who really had no clue) told me they couldnt do anything. I would have to have a locksmith "reset" the locks to match one key. I really have no idea which route is best. And it has manual locks so maybe that will make it easier. I just dont know. Thanks for any help.

I would think you could go to any decent locksmith and just have the locks rekeyed to match, we did this on a 91 ford pickup so that we did not have to have different keys. We had replaced the passenger door from one in a junkyard after an accident, I think it was around $100 about three years ago.

Door Locks

Neil - I had all the locks (ignition and doors) changed by a locksmith a few months ago (he also made me 6 new keys). His charge was $150 for everything. Took him about 2 hours. This should give you a range for cost if you decide to change all the locks, Regards, Lynn

Another option

JC Whitney has remote keyless door locks for $39. Easy to install, mine works from 100 ft and flashes the lights while locking/unlocking. Another button, which is supposed to unlock the trunk, now honks the horn.

Wow, that remote sounds like a good deal.

Hey, has anyone had the ignition switch recall done at the dealer? What do they change and does it give you a new key to carry?

Thanks,

Blake

Blakers: I had the ignition switch recall done. The switch is a different part from the key lock; so, no, you don't get a new key. Nice try... (The lock tumbler removes from the switch is just a couple of seconds. )

HI Neal, did you know that a locksmith can cut you a key for your door on one side and the ign. on the other? Or he could re-key your ign. lock.

Blake, I'd avoid that ignition recall like AIDS (hey, we don't have the plague anymore). I don't even want to think about the damage a dealer monkey can do in the front seat with a soldering iron. Or was that the light switch or blower motor, there's been so many recalls I don't remember anymore.

Thanks for that advice illflem. Hey, what is the ignition switch recall all about anyway? You say it does not effect us? My other recalls sitting here are for the heater switch, hook latch and throttle cable. Never took it in yet for anything.
