Ignition key

My son owns a 91. 5 , he can pull his key out of the ignition once he starts the truck, is this normal ? or does he need a new switch ? Thanks, Doug

Not normal. Something inside is worn out.

I had a Chevy truck like that once. Switch was in the dash. Drove it many many years like that. Was kind of nice knowing that if I lost/forgot my key I could use a screwdriver to run.

Both of my rigs do this. TugboatPhil showed me this "Dodge Option" a few years back. I love it. I only need to keep track of one set of keys. I start the truck,pull said key,lock the doors and let her warm up. I can lock up the shop when I exit and then unlock my truck.



Also, when you make a quick stop for coffee/news print/ dog or cat flea meds etc. you can grab the keys from said ignition and allow the vehicle to remain running. Lock the doors and grab you coffee/paper/doughnuts. I hate to have to keep shutting the engine off when I'm in town at every stop I make. That gets old to have to watch the EGT gauge each time espessially with a large turbo/POD's and a modded pump. Takes about three/four min to hit 300°



Another wonderful option integrated in same vehicle is the fact that the glove box will not open by mearly a turn of the knob. One must use the key to open the box door. What a major PITA. Oh, wait,,,,,,,,I simply REMOVE THE KEY from the ignition (w/vehicle running) and I or the wife gain access to said box!! I LOVE IT. Them Dodge engineers are a real piece of work. Thinking of everything, they are.

If you turn the truck off and still need the key to turn it back on I would leave it alone and be happy with the "feature".



Dodge hit it big with like keyed door locks and ignition IMO. I prefer the old style keys though...

Because some day, it's possible to find the while you are out on the boat,,,,, some kid is likely to spot your CD collection and rifle through it. And, to make matters worse, said kid may also spot that oil can one would be apt to carry and provide a bit of essential lubrication when one does not require said lubrication.

Hey, I only lost the EMPTY CD case (Sgt Pepper by the way). And I can still see the oil drips in the paint.



But I still rarely lock the door, and never when it's running.

I had this "problem" when I had my 93. It bugged me, so I replaced the key cylinder with one fom Mopar. It was an easy fix, even for a novice, thanks to the FSM. Don't recall the price, but you'll add to it the cost of a locksmith to adjust the tumblers to match your doors. Or, live with it and save yourself the dough…

My garage is 16 feet from my house, if I go in the house to grab a soda out of the fridge I lock the door! NS, it is getting bad in this country when you cannot leave anything you own unlocked for fear of some knothead robbing you...

Maybe you're living in the wrong country! (or part of) I never lock the doors, never lock the vehicles, and leave the keys in the truck most of the time. Rules excepted for halloween! :-laf And I live in town too!

My neighborhood is going to the dogs, I have had several thefts in the last five years and all of it was unlocked vehicles and/or garage. This is one of the safest places on the planet live. 7% of the population has a concealed weapons permit...

OK, I'll tell the story so Tugger understands.

A couple of years ago my truck got "broken into" at the marina. The doors were unlocked and the key was in the ignition, where it belongs. Some kids or pranksters must have been looking for something to steal, but I don't leave anything in my truck worth taking. So they found a qt of 15-40 Rotella behind the seat and poured it over the drivers window and door, apparently because they were POd that there was nothing in there to steal. Then they tossed my key into the middle of the parking lot.

The thing that really ticked me off was why did they have to waste a good qt of Rotella?

Yes. . it took a long time to clean the oil out of the window felt. I still get streaks from time to time.

That's my story and I'm "sticking" to it.

Now I take my key out... but I still don't lock the door.
