Greetings, I'm having issues with my ignition on my 97. The key will go in the ignition fine and start the engine fine but when I shut her down and try to remove the key it is very difficult to remove. I have used electrical cleaner spray with a little lube and that worked for a little bit but I'm thinking it may be time for a new igition swich. Have any of you replaced that part and how difficult is the job, can it be done at home? Where would be a good place to get the part or is is a dealer part? The keys are in good condition both sets they are not worn out. All replies welcome. Thanks Brian

It is hard for me to believe that the switch is worn out. Mine is working just fine. Before replacing it I would take it to a locksmith and get a professional opinion.

Its probably not the same part number. But, my 94 Chrysler Concorde has had the same problem. I've only had to replace it once in the 4 years Ive had it. But the previous (original) owner had the replace it twice. Chrysler told me they had to replace a lot of those switches. So, I'm very careful making sure I get the key pushing in when turning, and turn it slower then I might to reduce the chance of wearing the plastic out again. If the Dodge part is like it is on my chrysler, its pretty easy and you can do it at home.

Ignition switches come readily from most parts dealers, with new keys. A competent locksmith should be able to key one to any desired tumbler settings. I'd have them look at it and offer their opinion before replacing it. They should be able to look at it, and perhaps even repair it, before you spend a great deal of money at a dealer. They're fairly easy to replace yourself, but then you have an ignition key and a door key. Myself, when buying used trucks, and actually keeping them for a while, I will replace both the ignition key and the door key, as you never know who might have a spare key for it.

Hope this helps some,

God bless,

Casey

I only insert the key with a ring (maybe a remote fob) attached. Every car/truck is seperate and snapped on a 3" spring loaded "d" belt hook. That way I have no additional weight hanging from the key. I heard that wares out the switches. On the plus side is that I can start all my cars at the same time for warm ups & snow clean up, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I to think its hard to believe the plastic is worn out? This only happens once in awhile bur still frustrating. Also I don't have lots of keys habging just usually the Ram keys itself. Thanks
