Mark Jackson, CEO of AutoNation (one of the nation's largest automobile dealers with numerous nationwide franchises), has a commentary in the 3 October Automotive News that really made me dislike him and his company. The title is:

"A Tax Increase on Gasoline is Long Overdue"

The ensuing commentary suggests that the government increase tax on gasoline to reduce demand. He hides the anti-free market, anti-american, and socialist basis of this argument by pointing out that high fuel consumption is a threat to national security.

He goes on to compare the tax on alcohol and cigarettes to a tax on gasoline, placing all three in the same category of taxes whose purpose is to decrease public consumption.

He says,

"Gradual increases in the federal tax on gasoline - on the order of 10 cents a gallon a year - can do wonders to influence consumer behavior. "

He points out that vehicles have become bloated in terms of both weight and horsepower. Then he says:

"Don't blame the manufacturers; they're just giving the people what they want. "

Oh, God forbid people should have what they want! We can't have that, now can we! How easy it is to suggest a tax hike from the comfort of our limosine!

As a result, I will never purchase a vehicle from any AutoNation dealer as long as Mark Jackson is CEO. Long live the free market!

I read that article also,to a CEO of his caliber money is no object, maybe he needs to drop down to a working mans salary, and get a good taste of living paycheck to paycheck for awhile. God forbid he loose his executive wash room key.
