Ill parrot,-Any Vet's or Bird owner's?

Our African Gray Congo seems to have become Ill in the last 10 days. The pet bird has a bad case of gas. Yes that is correct the bird farts. And I don't mean to sound inappropriate but this has become very embarrassing in our home. The good thing is that the gas does not have any odor.

When we have guest over or are talking on the phone and Mango ( named after Kris Katan SNL ) starts ripping his mega fart's we always get blamed. People just don't understand that our pet is ILL.

So if any one knows what type of medicine to give a parrot to relieve him of gas it would be appreciated.

I’ve had birds for the past 20 years – even had a breeding aviary for a few of those years. Right now we have two Macaws.



Never heard of a bird fart – there is a yeast type disease they can get which is called Candida, it does throw off gas but it comes up through the crop. More than likely he is demonstrating some of the surprising things Greys can mimic. If you haven’t you should find a good avian vet in your area and give the bird periodic checkups, Best bet is to go through your university vet school and get some names.



As a precaution, lightly bleach his water and cage. to kill bacteria.

I'm sorry, but this is absolutely hilarious. There's nothing funny about someone's pet in distress, but you have to admit a "farting disorder" is comical.



It's 10000 times funnier if the bird isn't actually farting, but rather is imitating someone in the home!

My congo repeats every thing. The congo has intelligence. When we pick up our keys he says "goodbye". Every morning "Good morning". When he wants a kiss "sugar". I hear popcorn and grape In my dreams. He just farts a lot. I don't know where he gets the giggle after farting. Oh yea when the phone rings "hello".

He even makes his own calls,says hello and starts laughing.

When he wants to sleep he says goodnight.

I have a house cat and they get along great. They even eat from the same bowl at the same time when I allow it. That bird will bite the poop out if rascal if rascal plays to rough. yea they play together.

Hell the bird probably knows more words than I do

Lil' off topic here... but when my Greman Shorthair has gas, he 99% of the time doesn't make any fart noises, he just has you run out of the room,man dies he reek, and I thought I was bad!

I owned an Eclectus so I have some experience with parrots. What kind of diet do you have him on?? Is he acting lathargic??

Yes he farts and then laughs. Funny thing I noticed today is the farts sound just like mine do.

The bird is very bonded to my wife. When she leaves the room Mango starts whistling at 160 decibels.

There is a long and unique story to our bird ownership.

In 91 when I met my wife I had a double yellow head amazon . She bought an umbrella cockatoo. They both died within 20 minutes of each other while she was cooking pickles. Instant pneumonia. I was at work while this happened.

4 years ago while she was at work the shift supervisor walked back into the office after a smoke break with mango. Having bird experience my wife quickly put him in a box and came home. The bird was starving. Mango also had NO vocabulary. We called law enforcement, radio stations and the dog pound. There was never any notice to claim a lost gray. The bird does not like men. So I figured some man did not know how to handle a gray and let him get away. The wings were not clipped properly as to prevent flight.

The upper beak is like the point of a knife and the lower is very sharp. That along with lightning fast reflexes and I quickly get a bloody finger.

A bird is like a toddler you can't leave them alone or furniture gets shredded.

This bird has the greatest sense of humor of any animal in history! You have GOT to get him on "stupid pet tricks". I'm laughing so hard I'm crying. :-laf

Was she using a teflon coated non-stick pan? The gas they put off can kill birds.

No Teflon. It was the vinegar. Acetic acid.

When we first got married we lived in her 14X56 trailer. Too many fumes in too small a space. I even had a necropsy done at Auburn university .

It was a sad day. Those 2 birds had bonded and spent most of the day sharing cages.

God brought us a very nice replacement.

We have an African Grey Congo also. They are absolutely amazing. Their intelligence is hard to comprehend unless it's witnessed in person. Ours will say "bye ' to me in my voice, call "mom" in either of our son's voices, scold the dog in my voice and call him in my wife's. He can mimick almost any noise after hearing it once. That's bad sometimes like in the case of the house alarm. He can duplicate it perfectly. He's always making dirtbike noises which includes shifting gears, thanks to our sons. Plus a lot more entertaining sounds and dialogue. They are incredible.

I dont have a congo but do have a african grey timneh and that sounds about right for it just imitating you mine will bite me and then laugh or say ouch for me

Seriously , with no gas smell, how do you know it is not imitating... ... ... :-laf ?



I have had a Scarlet Macaw for over 20 years now ,and wish the problem was just farting!! Her latest learning is hanging from her cage corner like a bat, and shooting the poop onto the floor. Large mess and a trick? she learned about 1 year ago.



When the wife was into falconery years ago, her hawks used to do that, but they were in an outside mew, and it is natural for them to minimize fouling the nest.

Sometimes I fart and then laugh after I do it. My wife doesn't laugh with me though
