Just a thought to all you guys considering gassers because they are low maintenance compared to the bigger trucks. It must have been awhile since you drove one because typically there is an ignition coil for each spark plug now. And those spark plugs should be replaced every 25-35k. And they are not the 2-3 dollar plugs of yore. I put plugs in my wife's old 02 chevy. Iridium tipped to the tune of 11 dollars a piece. For the pep boys brand! And the fuel filters should also be replaced around 25k. But they are not exactly accessible or designed for easy replacement so tearing the fitting off the line is possible. And no, the threads aren't NPT, or aeronautical. They are some wierd one off type.



Don't forget those fun catalytics either. and the rotten exhaust pipes from the water that comes from the cat. Factory SS pipes would make the truck too expensive.



Just wanted to send you a little reminder about the wonderful world of gas.



I do have a hot deal on an 02 2500 Chevy HD if you are determined to get one though.

Hmmm, I wonder how many times I could replace all that stuff for the $2100 I have in injectors?



Its all relative, just because a diesel has supposedly less maintenance doesn't mean it cost less to maintain.

Finally got home for a few weeks, should have most of it off this weekend. I should be rid of the truck in a couple weeks. A new Forester XT for the wife...



On a side note, even though they have been tested, I am confident (as in 100% sure) I have an injector that is intermittently sticking open. It did it again Sunday... sat there missing (one cylinder) and puffing blue smoke... it cleared up after a few minutes. It wasn't as rough as it was the first couple times, but it was fine for a week then it screwed up again. It was absolutely normal tonight hooking to the camper. There is no other explanation (nothing that I've read/researched would fail and cause this symptom).



There's is no way I would ever be able to trust it to run cross country again... I'm a little concerned hauling my 5vr 300 miles to my parents house this Friday. I know its an injector, it is doing the same thing it did when the one failed in January. Its not fuel because I have ran several tanks through since then. And its not like I put a lot of miles on it since it happened the first... it sat for over five weeks while I drove my 1997 Subaru to Washington state (I trust the car more than the truck at this point).



Unfortunately, unless it fails completely, it'll probably never test "bad"... but it isn't trustworthy until it fails. Just sucks having a truck that you don't feel confident driving. Its frustrating...

FYI... I have the EXACT same thing going on that you do.



My injectors have been checked a few times now... No issues.



Still working on the solution.



I changed out my cam and crank sensors... Helped a BUNCH! You may want to give that a try... They are only about $20 each from Cummins.

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but any chance it could just be a wiring harness problem? A corroded or oiled-up connector or a pinched harness?

Well, this sucks (for me, and everyone else that owns a truck)... I was offered $6400 for the truck over the weekend. It KBB'd at nearly $13000 in August, but only $8400 currently... they low-balled me, but its dropped almost $5k in value in a month's time based on KBB. The value of the LT market dropped out... they don't want them as trades. My wife's 2000 V6 mustang is almost worth as much as my newer, more expensive truck... figure that one out.



So, I guess we're keeping this truck for a while. I am going to contact Lloyd about buying a set of NEW injectors for this pig. See how much it would cost to have the F1 tips swapped onto the new bodies. I am going to check the sensors, but if you heard this one time, you'd think injector the same as myself.



I did get my camper home his weekend, but it was questionable... injector sorta hung on Friday and was noisy the entire way home.

I was looking at getting a 6. 7. . I would normally sell my own truck and swap some stuff from my old truck to the new truck (my suspension). So for the heck of it. I wanted to see what the dealer would give me for my truck. My truck has 44,000 miles on it and never had a problem. My local dealer offered me $17,000 for the first go around. The second offer they bumped it to $20,000.



I decided against the deal because I am still hestitant to pull the trigger w/ a built up emisssion engine w/ some of the problems.



It's all up to the dealer what they want to give. Go to another dealer.

I probably would do better trading truck for truck, I'm going to see about that when I get the truck back from my parents... I have theirs at Mid-Atlantic to get the injectors and VP44 replaced...

Steve, you might want to try some Power Service Diesel Kleen if you haven't already. Several times lately I have heard what I thought may have been a sticking injector and added PSDK. It immediately cleared up the sound. Have tried Stanadyne PF and a couple of others that didn't help. Seems to come back every 5k to 10k miles. I think this ULSD fuel is really hard on CR injectors.

I've already tried that, my guess it is the actuator part of the injector (the part not replaced with the nozzle) that is causing this issues.



I'm going to try some of these suggestions, going to order a new cam sensor, crank sensor, and FCA... try it all. Anything else I should throw at it while I'm in there???

Well, installed new crank and cam position sensors...



The cam sensor is a PITA to access and only after half through the process did I realize I should have cranked the wheel full right. I also found that the primary ground cable needed removed from the block and the harness needed loosened from the engine mount... these screws are 5mm allen.



I also installed a new FCA... note to self, the screws are T-25...



Started it up and it was rough, although I did just replace two engine control sensors and the FCA. Will know more tomorrow as I drive it more. I hope it not a big issue as I leave for Washington state in a week... with the truck.
