Hi Folks,
Perhaps some of you remember my saga of the 4. 10 gear set change the dealership was going to make for me. Well, I dropped the Ram off this p. m. and asked to see the new 4. 10s.
They brought me into the service area and showed me a COMPLETE rear end housing they will be swapping on our Ram. Needlesss to say I was both shocked and elated the change was a factory set-up unit in liew of a tech in the dealership setting up the gear set on a bench between coffee and donuts!!!
Now all I have to do is relearn how to drive it, and if the snow ever melts hook up the 5er and go for a ride! #ad
Oh! Did I mention they're footin' the bill! #ad

I want you to know that 4:10's are awesome, as I had 3:55's on my last RAM #ad
The only thing I wish DC would offer is the 3:73's! #ad

Robby,
Thanks for your reply. Do you need the 4. 10s
for towing? I know I may not like the solo top end but I can deal with that as long as I can haul the 5er easier. I'd like to hear about some of your driving experiences with the 4. 10s.
Thanks again!

I had a 2000 with 3:54s. I kept it 7 months and sold it. Ordered my 2001 with 4:10s. Awesome!

Have had 2001 4x4 w/4. 10s for 21,000 miles. Tow a lot, so love the gears.

Didn't like the high rpms while running empty, so added a Gear Vendors.

Ran about 2450 rpms w/4. 10 in 5th at 75mph.

Engine noise at 90mph was scary!

Runs about 1900 rpms w/4. 10 in 5th GV OD at 75mph.

Now all is good.

Pulling 5th wheel tt on 2200 mile trip soon. Will know how well I like the GV unit when I get back.

Thanks gentlemen! That's what I hope to hear.
I just returned from the dealership and yup,
rpm is higher, and gas milage on the overhead will take some getting used to. I hope the engine still has some breakin to go (4900 miles). I stay pretty much to the speed limit especially with the 5er so I hope to manage lower rpms for most driving. Now we're getting itchy to get out and tow! The only problem now is that the snow is keeping me from getting to hitch the rig up! #ad

holy toledo!!!!you have A LONG WAY TO GO before broken-in... towing your 5'er will hasten it,but i'm sure you'll see an improvement in due time... good luck!!... tom

I really like the 4:10s. When towing on two lane/55 MPH roads I am still at 1700. Any higher gear and I would feel uncomfortable. Also, my fuel mileage is great when I run the speed limit.

Thanks for the support Tom and Alan.
That's just the information I was hoping to hear. In reality, I wasn't sure I was making the right move, if I found out I didn't like the gear change the Missus was getting ready to (literally) "bomb" the Ram! #ad

On my stump: For a decade now Dodge has stubbornly hung on to two ratios. The 354/55 and the 410s. But they have made a number of changes. 1. Moved from a lower rpm engine(12V) to a higher rpm engine(24V). 2. Moved 2 sizes bigger on tires on both the DRW and SRW trucks. I will be the first to admit my 4:10s and DEE are ideal for towing. And I will also be the first to admit that they are a little tight for bob-tailing a 1,000 miles at 75 mph. Best all around needs to be 373 or 390. Ford gives a much wider choice of ratios as well as GM. My hope is the "New Generation" trux will come with a wider choice. Does anyone know how to email the design eng. section of DC?

Does anyone know if 3. 73 gears are available from aftemarket gear vendors? If you're going to pay for a gear change, wouldn't it makes sense to put in 3. 73?

Just wondering. .

yes i believe that 3. 73 is an available ratio .

tagalong , i hope they changed the wheel speed factor in your computer , i would double check that as your speedo will be off .

Not to worry about the speedo. The sending unit reads from the ring gear. As long as the stock size tires are used, different ratios won't change the speedo. On pre-'98 models, where the speedo reads from the tailshaft on the transmission, a new sending unit gear is changed to correct the speedo.

where did you find info stating that the speed is taken off the ring gear ? mt trans has a speed sensor in it , what is that used for ?

The sensor on the rear axle is the sensor for the RWAL antilock brakes.

When I went to 32" tires on my '95, I had to change out the gear in the sending unit on the transmission's tail shaft. When I went to do the same on my '98, I was told and shown that there is no sending unit on the 98 and later transmission. The speedo shares the ring gear sending unit with antilock brakes. Changing tire size requires changing a parameter in the pcm to correct the speedo as it changes axle speed for a given mph. Changing gear ratio doesn't change axle speed for the same mph and doesn't alter speedo accuracy. Unless Dodge has gone back to a sending unit on the transmission, which would be a good thing, I don't know what the sending unit is for. Mine has a plug in the hole where the unit used to be in previous years.

I wouldn't have one without the 4. 10s. I drove a 2000 the other day with the 3. 54 and it had no "balls" on takeoff compared to mine. If you plan on towing anything even semi-heavy, the 4. 10s are the only way to go. I'm getting 17-18 mpg unloaded on the highway running 65-70 and 10-13 mpg towing 12k# at the same speeds! I don't think you can ask for more than that from a big heavy truck!

I am looking for a complete rear axle with 4:10s I pull Travel Trailers and 5th wheels new ones to dealers I have 3:55 now and its a 4X4. The Junkyards are telling me 2000 or 2001 only Im only going to change the rear for now I know I wont be able to use 4X4 but Im not sure that I will keep doing this so only the rear for now. What will fit my truck? The 3:55s are workin for now but the trans isnt going to last long like this too many downshifts too fast for 3rd too slow for OD.

To FJ40Charles: Yes the R&P sets are available for the 3:54 rear ends to change to 3:73 or 3:90. The set slides right into the existing carrier. The cost is $350 for the set and can be ordered from a co. in the northwest. Check some past threads on this subject. This is not the first or the last time we will bat this around. The name of the co. is some guy's name and something else. ie: Dave's or Randy's or Joe's Gear service. It's something like that. My memory is excellant, it's just short.

Barry,

Thanks for the info. I've heard of Randy's ring and pinion, but not the others. I should have done a search first.
