after removing my map sensor because i thought it was the iat my check engine light came on and wont shut off. any sugestions?

I had a f@rd like that, and it required that you do a hard code-clearing which involved removing battery cables for 5 minutes, but I think we ended up getting a code reader that would actually clear the codes, or it gave better instructions instead of the battery thing.

The only way the map can set a code is if your were to turn the key on while the map was disconnected???

ffken, no problem, did it work?

whitmore,

I sorta figured that would have had to be the case as his check engine light was on.

no luck on the batery reset. any other ideas? also, i didn't have the sensor off when i turned the key on. i realized it was the wrong sensor and put it right back on.

In same boat

I did the exact sme thing when all the talk came out about cleaning the IAT for better performance/economy. (didn't work for me). If I remember correctly, I turned the ign. on then off three times, left in on positoin third time and check engine light went off and has not returned. bg

Make sure the connector is plugged in to the sensor. The manual says the lamp may reset after two trips if no further malfunctions are detected. bg

To my knowledge, and lots of experience trying, the only way to kill the code is to get a code scanner (OBD II). If every thing is OK now (sensors working and connected) the MIL (check engine light) will go out after X number of starts but the codes will stay in the ECU until they are cleared by a scanner.

Go to your local Auto Zone, and ask to borrow their OBD II scanner. If you have no Auto Zones in your area, try the other auto parts places. Someone is sure to have on for customer use.

Or you could just buy one, and if you have a laptop, I recommend the Alex Pepper BOD-2 program. Same price as the low end code readers but you get so much more.

i tried holding down my mileage trip reset button while turning on ignition and it seemed to run some sort of diognostic on my instrument panel. anyone heard of this?

From my 02 service manual:

"Holding this switch depressed while turning the ignition

switch from the Off position to the On position

will activate the EMIC self-diagnostic actuator test. "

EMIC is electro-mechanical instrument cluster. It appears that's what it's supposed to do.

On page 25-19 of the 2000 maintenace manual, first column under "DTC Self Erasure" the following is stated:

"With one trip components or systems, the MIL is illuminated upon test failure and DTCs are stored.

Two trip monitors are conponents requiring failure in two consecutive trips for MIL illumination. Upon failure of the first test, the Task Manager enters a maturing code, If the component fails the test for a second time the code matures and a DTC is set.

After three good trips the MIL is extinguished and the Task Manager automatically switches the trip counter to a warm-up cycle counter. DTCs are automatically erased following 40 warm-up cycles if the component does not fail again. "

You need to run the engine for 3 times, not just cycle the key but actually start the engine and run it. I know this works, because I set my first code for the map sensor 2 weeks ago. It was caused by my COMP box going bad on me. Good luck.

;)

40 trips to get the code out of the ECU. If you do have a problem, that is a long time to try to track down where the problem lies,

sticks,

I agree, but it is nice to know that you do not have to rely on having the dealer or a friend with the proper gear, clear the codes, in that they will eventually clear themselves. :)

40 trips??

That would take my wife one afternoon to get that many starts and stops completed. bg

It would be cheaper for you, and a he!! of a lot eaiser on the Truck to just spend the $150 and buy a scanner. :D

:D awesome! just waiting and going through enough starts cleared my check engine light. If i ever get curious about what code came up, maybe i will borrow a scanner. thanks for all the advice. :D
