To my knowledge, and lots of experience trying, the only way to kill the code is to get a code scanner (OBD II). If every thing is OK now (sensors working and connected) the MIL (check engine light) will go out after X number of starts but the codes will stay in the ECU until they are cleared by a scanner.
Go to your local Auto Zone, and ask to borrow their OBD II scanner. If you have no Auto Zones in your area, try the other auto parts places. Someone is sure to have on for customer use.
Or you could just buy one, and if you have a laptop, I recommend the Alex Pepper BOD-2 program. Same price as the low end code readers but you get so much more.
