I'm a first time Dodge and diesel truck owner. I traded my Toyota Tundra in on an '03 2500HD. I got tired of the bad mileage in the Tundra when towing my travel trailer. No complaints on power just bad mileage.

I love this truck. It's got plenty of power and it's worst mileage is better than the best mileage in the Tundra. My only complaints so far are the design of the doors. The front doors extend past the windshield providing just enough space for snow and ice to accumulate. So, when I open the door, the snow/ice falls in the door as I'm hopping out. There's also an annoying vibration in the gear shift when the engine's under load. I think I've got it narrowed down to the shifter boot and sliding the boot down the shifter seems to make a difference. I'm not 100% that's it yet but I think it is. The roads here Colorado aren't the best around and the truck definitely rides rough over some. I'd like to change the shocks and maybe shackles to soften the ride but we'll have to wait for more money and spousal approval on that one.

I've put over 4600 miles on it in just over three weeks. I can definitely tell a difference in the engine. It revs up easier and doesn't seem as tight. I'm really excited to see what type of mileage I get once the engines broken in.

Something that really bothered me after I bought it was the oil-change interval. Cummins says they increased the interval to 15k (not that I'd go that far but that's double last years' engine, right?). Dodge has reduced the interval listed in the manual to 3750. I think that's half of last year's. I called Cummins and they based the 15k on a larger oil capacity than Dodge is using. I was really banking on not having to change my oil as much as the Toyota especially given that this one takes twice as much oil. Is there anything I can do to modify that interval?

There are many people on this board running extended drain intervals. Most of them use some sort of auxillary bypass oil filter and synthetic oil. I use the amsoil dual remote bypass oil filter setup. Others just use the remote bypass, and yet others use someone elses. The bypass filters remove smaller particles than the full fow filters. I run 20k between changes and change full flow filter every 5k and the bypass every 10k and replace all the oil at 20k. Some here run much longer than that. I also use a synthetic oil. You might try a search on extended drain intervals here. It is likely to bring up tons of info so that you can decide or at least where to go look for more info.

If you look in the owners manual that oil change interval is for California engines. 49 states and Canada are at 7500 miles for hard use. Light use is still 15,000 miles. I don't think I read the little symbols wrong.

You're right! I didn't even see/pay attention to the symbols. Now, that makes me feel much better.

I have only test drove a 3rd gen, so my observations are based on my experience with my 5 speed Y2K. If I lug the engine the driveline will vibrate the shifter, and with it the loose change stored in the transfer case boot along with my shifter mounted e-brake switch. I know it is time to shift down when this starts. Only on rare interstate runs (long hills with a large load)does the engine lug enough to vibrate.

The engine will pull down to 1200RPM, but it is designed to "run" between 1650 and 2400. With a 6 speed you have a gear for every occasion, be sure you use them.

With your rice burner the engine would quit pulling when it got to low RPM and you HAD to shift. With the Cummins you need to make those decisions.

Just my 2 cents worth, it may not be your issue.

I have the feeling that with that quieter engine under the hood, we will be hearing lots of noises that we did not notice with the the older trucks. But I am sure that they were still there.

Now that you have the facts, does that mean there ISN'T anything you don't like about the 2003? :D :D

Other than my wife complaining about not being able to walk around it in the garage, NO!
