How about this one

CFAR:

A better comparison on price is the American Tool 65 gallon tool box/fuel tank combo for $1067 with installtion kit. Level shows on stock gauge. Since it works through the PCM, it also has low fuel light comes on when it's low.

I know but I wanted a 90 or 97 or 98 or 100 depending on the manufac.

On the northern tool website (see link above) they want 230 bucks more for 7 gallons. Or am I missing something?

You're right on price...

CFAR:

You're right on the price, but when I called Northern and asked them if they would custom order one with height reduced, they said no.

I sent e-mails to three manufaturers and called one and the closest one was over $400 more than mine. American tool didn't charge me extra to modify dimensions and the craftsmanship is outstanding. The $1067 also included $120 for shipping.

For a transfer tank or if you want to engineer your own aux setup, it's hard to beat the Northern Tool tanks. But if you want custom, It's hard to beat American Tank.

So, which one you gonna git?

I had a bed tank that I equiped with a fuel pump to fill trucks main tank with a flip of the switch-problem was you had to really pay attention to the fuel gauge so you did not overfill main tank. My next tank (newer truck) was a Transfer Flow 98 gal in bed tank. Great system-high price. Don't have to worry about fuel running all over the road as the computer takes care of turning on and off transfer pump. I have a 2003 on order and probably will put an aux tank in bed-don't know what I'll do yet but I'm leaning towards less expensive. :D
What is wrong with blocking off the vent and installing one on the Aux tank. Just a thought as I will be making a tank from scratch fairly soon. :)

Chris- that's quite a setup  ! Probably brain more work than I can gather, but nice job. My wife is moaning over the thought of an auxillary tank- she says I don't stop enough for pee breaks as it is:-laf :-{} ... .....

It sounds completely feasible to me Chipstien. I also wonder about that vent in the case of a rollover. Wouldn't the vent be constructed like an axle vent whereas gas (vapor) can escape but not liquid? Yes, that would render it useless if the tank is that full but if you have the aux tank vented as well...

Just thinking out loud.

How high can you go?

And if you know whats the height of the bed rails?

Is the northern under the rail or over?

I have the 60 gallon combo that Northern sells only I had it custom built by RDS to my specs.

They did a great job and I am very satisfied with it, I also ordered a level sending unit from westac and a gauge for my cab, I have this aux tank as my main feed to the L/P and use my oem tank as a transfer now.

cheers, Kevin

I saw the neatest looking setup today on a 96 3500. 105 gal steel bed tank-with 1 1/2" (?) hose going out the bottom of tank on drivers side front (he cut hole in bed) connected to main tank filler line. He had disconnected main tank line and overflow vent fron fuel door area. He extended vent line up to top of bed tank and used a new fuel filler which he had mounted up high in his cap. Both the bed tank and main tank vented into this filler tube. Main tank fills by gravity (thru 1 1/2" fitting under bed tank into main tank) which keeps main tank full until bed tank is empty. He has a vertical gauge on top of bed tank that he can see in rear view mirror. I did not believe you could gravity flow without problems but his setup proves me wrong. His vents are high enough in the filler tube so it is not a problem. He drilled a small air hole in the gauge top (plastic clear tube like upside down jelly jar-these are slod by any wholesale fuel supply company) to allow air into the system to replace fuel as it is used. I took some digital pics but have too many bytes to post.

1" below the bed rail

CFAR:

The American 65 Gal Toolbox/combo was 19" tall (even with top of bed), but I had them make mine 18" tall (1" below the top of bed). Based on my friend's Northern, his is even with the bedrail 19" tall.

Whitmore: I've heard good reports about RDS. I had been given their contact info long ago, but couldn't find it.

All: If your happy with what you got, then that's all that matters.
