I'm looking for a toolbox that I can put in the truck when I need to. I was hoping to get something that I could cable lock to my lower tie down, lock closed, be weather tight, and fit in the back seat on one side so I can carry a passenger back there too. My tool pouch is one of those electricians bags that is about a 1 foot cube, I would be keeping that and some small sundries in the box. I keep the tools in the cab full time now, and they get in the way.

Thanks in advance.

I found a small storage box in Lowes, weather tight, not too big, but I fit all my camping stuff in there, which also is a lot of stuff I just want with me when off road.

I had a much bigger one before that. It easily swallowed all the things I had , but it was just a bit too big. Managed to put more into it than I really needed and it got too heavy too fast. I wanted to be able to take the box out with easy if I need the full length of the bed at the lumber yard. The big box just didnt work out. The smaller box, filled is still a managable weight and just fits in the rear seat if I need to take it out of the bed.

It has two heavy over lapping holes for locks. Albeit plastic. . so anyone could cut through, but it wont rust. I don't luck it since it's in my cap. But I use a small shackle to keep it closed - instead of a lock. I run a ratchet strap from one of the bed tie down, up through the shackle, over the lid and back down to the other lower tie down in the bead.

The box easily fits between the two tie downs. So it leaves me room to get a small tool box and square milk create in each side that the ratchet tie down catches.

Between the ran drops tomorrow, if it ever stops raining, I snap a pix.

Ah, I'll be, I found them on line at lowes...

The one I have and am using now (Click here to go to the page @ lowes. )

The 1st one I bought(Click here to go to the page @ lowes. ) , It's big enough to store firewood in when we go camping for a weekend.

Both have been with me for a few years and neither has cracked. The smaller box rides, strapped down, in the bed of my truck full time and gets tossed around at camp sites.

Rob,

Here's my setup... just when I went out, it started to drizzle...

Granted I got the cap over it, but the box has been out in the rain when camping.

And the Craftsman box is suppose to be weather proof, but it's lived it's whole life mounted under the cap in the bed.

Bob, I stopped at Lowes today and got the smaller of the two Contico boxes you posted about. It should be great for my use. I wanted it to be able to be locked in the back (closed and to the truck) for short stops like the grocery store but when I am in less safe places and when i pick up dirt and/or rocks, I want to put it in the cab, plus it's nice to be able to have the bed clear. Thanks for the help, I had stopped at HD, Sears, and some other places but Lowes is a little out of the way and I just thought they would have the same stuff as I had already seen. I'm glad you helped me, I think it is going to be perfect for what i need.

Thanks,

Rob

Cool, glad the info was of help.

I went nutz trying to find a box for about a year after I got the cap.

I literally tripped over it in Lowes on night, it was out in the isle.

It's surprising thick material and rugged for the price.

Being low in the bed, you don't really see it when just walking around. . out of site , out of mind.

Do you have a bed liner? I don't and with how my bed is, I have a scrap piece of 4x4 about 24" long I had around, laying down behind between the box and the front wall of the bed so it sits well.

If you got the bed liner insert, I think your all set, unless you just don't want the pressure on the hinges.

For Rocks (and the wifey hates it and thought I get rid of it after I got the Dodge, but it's just too darn usefull)
