Great pics!! do you know if it will work with the RB1 with navigation? do you get instuctions on how to actually use the xm unit?

Will it work

Will it work. I found this quote:

This XM Direct system will work in most Satellite Radio ready Chrysler vehicles. Designed to work with the following 2003-2005 Chrysler vehicles with RB1, RAZ, RBQ, RBU or RBP factory radios. Will NOT work in vehicles with factory installed navigation.

by searching on yahoo etc. for the model number that was posted on the link on my first post of this thread from page one.

Good luck,

Hoagie

For anyone that wants to try and install the XM adapter as Hoagie did, let me tell you: It is easy.

I ordered the system that Hoagie mentioned and it arrived in about 3 days.

Installation took about an hour. I routed the antenna wire through the third brake light and then over to the dash and up to the radio.

The rest of the components are easy to install via the instructions. A little challenging to fit into the space behind the radio but it will work.

The only complaint is that I can't scroll through the entire title or artist name. I get the first few letters and thats it. Minor inconvenience.

FWIW, I have the 6 disc in dash Infinity radio. (RBQ ?) Steering wheel controls. No navigation. Completely stock appearance with XM installed which is the look I was going for. Can't steal what you can't see.

Thanks to Hoagie for the research and great install instructions! Nicely done.

Steve,

I think my radio is the same unit you have. I tried to install the XM aftermarket conversion system months ago but was unsuccessful because neither I or a friend who was a Dodge dealership mechanic until 2005 were able to find and disable the Sirius system which was a factory install. Does/did your truck have Sirius?

I have learned that due to the many varied configurations of these trucks it is a larger challenge to install aftermarket XM than I first thought.

Harvey,

No, I did not have the Sirius. I don't remember if Dodge offered it in 04. I have the Infinity 6 disc radio, the one with the bass and treble slides on the left. I do not have the navigation system.

The install was super easy, especially with Hoagies pictures. I am finding that it does not get as good reception as the XM in my wifes 06 Honda Pilot that had it factory installed. I am thinking better antenna or more powerful receiver in her car. Still, mine works well and NO commercials!!

Maybe you could swap out a non Sirius enabled radio for yours? I would think the software or programming for the Sirius is in the radio itself?

Good luck -

Steve

Thanks Hoagie... I have an 06 also and the Sirius. I really would have liked the XM so I'll be looking into this. Baseball won't start again til April so I have some time to follow this thread and see how others' install goes. Great find !! I was considering the Roady but this seems MUCH better.

Wouldn't you just unplug it from the back of the factory head unit?

I did this same installation about 2 months ago on my NAV radio and it works great. I found out though that without some other antennea wire I cannot have the artist and song displayed. I have not investigated this any further though. Sometimes it will show the song and sometimes it only shows the channel I am tuned to. This is an easy install.

On power up my radio displays Sirius then immediately displays xm and then whatever channel you have xm. If your unit has something plugged into the back of the factory unit it may in fact be the Sirius unit- There are basically two separate sets of wires- the factory power-in and speaker out as well as on mine an empty set of plug in jacks that's the place where I plugged in my unit.

My mechanic friend and I removed the glove box and the rear seat searching everywhere we could think of for the "Sirius" box. The best we could determine was the Sirius unit is contained in the head unit in my '06. I gave up and have tried to learn to like Sirius.

Harvey

I had heard once... . on this forum I think... that it was under one of the seats... can't really recall. I would think the dealer service shop would likely know. Dunno if you really have to remove it... can't you just unhook from the radio and hook in the XM?

For me, I can't really like Sirius and would love to have the available baseball in the summer and Coast to Coast AM that XM has.

Hoagie,

I just ordered this unit and it should be here today or tomorrow. I've been following this thread since you posted it. Mine is an 06'. I talked to the dealer service rep today... pretty good 5 Star dealership... and he personally had no idea where the Sirius unit is. From what I understand of your posts you did not need to unplug anything from the factory radio to disable the Sirius... ??? Does this mean the when you plug in the XM it just 'overpowers' the Sirius w/o any disabling of that unit???

I was also wondering about the install location of the larger black box incl. with the kit... has XM on top... ?? I can see the smaller one with the red label. Maybe all this will be in the directions incl with the unit. .

He also said it is common to just Velcro the XM antenna to a spot under the dash... would be cleaner and I'd be it would work just as well. I've read some guys on a Porsche forum that just stuck it onto the dash where it meets the glass.

Any help clearing up the questions of Sirius disable will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

I just plugged the XM converter into the back of the radio and it works. You do not have to disable anything. The XM antennae will input and the radio will play it. I was able to put the black XM box right behind the dash panel face plate that covers the radio. There is plenty of room back there and I also have a triple gauge pod and still have room. Good Luck.

Jeep. .

Thanks for that reply... amazing to me that the XM will trump the Sirius that easily. I have an 06 with REC radio. If it has the plug in back I'm good to go I guess. I will report since a few have asked about the 06 with REC radios... .

Hope you have luck with your install. In my readers rigs are photos with some suggestions for install. I don't think that there is any uninstall or overpower of Sirius. I know that it takes about an hour to get the radio activated fully from XM. the center photo talks about where I put the boxes. I also just routed the antenna as shown and it has held up well for two years-one in my 04 and one in my 05. Sorry for the delay in reply-was in Cancun :)

Hoagie,

Thanks for the reply. I have since contacted the customer scvs. dept. of Radios & More and been told that these units do NOT work on 06 trucks. Other 06 owners have had some frustrating experiences. Seems there was a change of format and that Dodge is now using a so called CAN Bus platform. She told me to check back since this is a very active market and that a unit will likely be available for this platform by year's end. I hope so.
