I stopped by my dealer today and was looking at an SR-10. They are selling them for 50K here in OKC and there is a waiting list.

Now for the interesting part...

They informed me that the Jeep Liberty would be arriving in Aug. with in line 4 diesels. A common rail injector setup with 160 HP and supposedly around 300 lb. torque at a low RPM range... something like 1700.

Anyone heard of this animal?

Is it a small Cummins or a Benz?

The dealer I talked to here also said it would be MB diesel engine. I think they also use a MB diesel in the Dodge Sprinter which is also marketed under the Freightliner name plate too.

Per Motor Trend it is a Benz diesel with a turbo. I have also heard that it is supposed to be simular to our fuel system. Wonder if we could get the folks at tst to make something for it.

the sprinter has the 5 cyl. MB diesel. not sure if they make a 4 banger?

"End up in the Unlimited/Wrangler Line???"

My guess is that future use of the diesel in the Jeeps will depend soley on the success level of the engine in the Liberty. If it sells well, we should see other models getting it - maybe even Dakota's. I already told the wife that her TJ is going to be on the trading block if they put that motor in the Unlimited. I havent had the opportunity to sit in one yet, but I am really hoping that it has a few more inches of leg room in the front seats... ...

Daimler owns quite a bit of stuff. Have you seen the list. Im impressed.

The company is called VG motori and it is out of italy. Its a division of daimler but I wouldnt call it a mb. No more than I would call my dodge a mb. There is more info in the general section if you do a search.

I told my girlfriend, the minute they put a diesel in the Grand Cherokee it will be in the driveway. I can't complain about the Grand Cherokee we have now, the 4. 0 In-line six is a great motor, but after driving a CTD, I won't have any more gasser's. I can picture it already, Grand Cherokee on one side of the garage, Wrangler on the other side, and the Ram in the driveway. And they are all DIESELS. OK OK, back to work.

Sounds much like the pipe dreams I have..... only I swap in a Jeep Rescue with the Cummins for the Grand Cherokee! I have actually been eyeing the CRD liberty for quite awhile now. I think that might be what my GF goes with next. Either that or she is thinking Passat TDI. It pisses her off that my truck gets better mileage on cheaper fuel than her Rodeo does! :D

Yes, I hear it all the time. She has to fill her jeep twice a week at forty dollars a pop and maybe goes 600 miles. I fill up once a week for 45-50 dollars and go well over 600 miles. I was hoping VW released that SUV they have with a diesel. But for her, the goal is the Grand Cherokee, which I really want to happen.

VW Toureg TDI

Volkswagen is going to release the Toureg in a 10 cylinder diesel this summer. Don't ask me why they thought they needed a 10 cylinder diesel?

Think of the torque at low rpm's and how smooth it will be! That Toureg is one nice truck that I would consider if I were in the market for a mid-size suv (although it weighs in close to a Chevy Suburban)

EDIT:

Some specs: v10 TDI, 4. 9L, 310HP @3750 RPM, 553 TQ @ 2000 RPM, Auto weighs 5825 LBS.

V-10 TDI

V-10 TDI in the Toureg has 313HP out of a 5 liter engine. . according to the published specs. Smooth power and a lot of torque is what they are shooting for to give a 'car like' ride.

VW has had a number of 2. 5L I-5 diesel engines over the years. Engineering a V-10 would be just 2 of the 5 cyl. engines put together. I reallize that its a lot more than just bondo'ing the thing together, but its easyer than starting from scratch. It has twin VNT turbos, like the single VNT turbo used since '98 on the 1. 9L TDI here in the USA, and the 3. x L V-6 TDI's of Audi.

I was out at the local Dodge/Jeep dealer today and they said it would be November before they got in a Liberty with the CRD engine in it.

I was in at the dealer about a year before I got my '03 2500 CTD asking about the Liberty w/diesel when I first heard about it. . After waiting a year I decided to get my truck, as I was tired of waiting. I would still be waiting by the sounds of it. . I also read where they were going to only have about 5000 of them the first year to 'test the waters'. I also heard that it would only have an automatic transmission in it. . which I feel is a let-down. I could be wrong, but thats what I 'heard'. .

10 cylinder diesel ? I will definitely check that out if it hits the street. I would be happy with the 5 cylinder. You know, I think as long as it is diesel I will be happy.

just got 04 jetta for my wife. 1. 9 tdi 5 speed. impressive power and good mileage-47+ last fill. sold 96 cherokee. liberty has independent suspention front and rear, not my choise on a fwd.

Actually, the Liberty is only IFS. It still has a solid rear axle, suspended by coil springs though, not leaf springs anymore. The new Grand Cherokees are going to be IFS as well.
