Well folks:
Yesterday I was on the to SC and it happened. I lost fifth gear again. But then there was a loud whine and grinding noise I was crusing along at 75 when it went. I down shifted to forth and into 4th over and drove on for another 40 miles. Pulled into a rest area, for obvious reasons and when I stopped I had no gear at all. When I let out the clutch just grinding noise. To make a longer story shorter, heat had caused the pressed on bearing on the in-put shaft to weld itself into the transmission. The bearing stopped turning and the in-put shaft was turning inside the bearing. The inter bearing melted and fell down into the transmission. More trouble. All the teeth on the in-put shaft are gone. Smooth. I've taken pictures and if I can get them scaned you'll see them. The entire front of the housing is burned black with the shaft housing even brown. I was towed to Murdock Dodge in Lavonia, Ga. and the mech. said he had never seen such a mess. Should have caught fire. The journal in the top of the housing where the oil is passed was even cracked. I was not using the Castrol lube but was a GL-4. New transmission was $3143. 00 plus installation so I ordered one from Standered Transmission in Texas and I should have Friday.
I told the wife I am blessed that it when it did, for the next day I would have had the fifth wheel behind me going to PF, Tenn. Well my baby is 150 miles away but it is surrounded by new 6 speeds, so it's still around friends.
By the way, the mech looked at the clutch and asked if I wanted a new one. No laber charge with the drive train out. I have the Luk Pro Gold and told him it had 45,000 on it. He said the wear patten was great and didn't want to belive it had that many miles. There are many more miles on it, he said. Said I must have very good driving habits. I think the US Gear OD has done a lot in the wear of the clutch.
Just wanted to let all know something to look out for. Could really ruin a trip.

First off, I hope you got a sample of the oil.
What GL-4 was it?

It may have been a bad bearing from the get -go. My third gear was messed up from day one, but would not break under warranty, lucky me.

What are your driving habits? It may be something the rest of us should try to avoid.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Given the shape of the trans input, I would be leery of the clutch disk hub. It could be bent or otherwise damaged. I'd go for a new clutch, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing/bushing. Did you order a gallon of Castrol Syntorq from Std. Trans?

Gene:
The driving habits are mostly 70-80 mph on the hwy in fifth over. I tow 2 trailers at a average of 12,500 lbs. I do run about 400 hp, but I ain't a hot rod. The truck is still on the OEM rear shoes at 197,000 miles. One set on the front. I use the OD a lot.
JoeD. I pressed the mech. for a truthful opinion and he felt the disc was OK. I did not get the Castrol but they installed the Mopar stuff for $24. 95 per qt. I though the Mopar lube was the Castrol I know I spent $2400. 00 beforei left the dealer. If I have any trouble with the clutch you will be getting a call from me for a new one. I need to know what will to I need to get together for the Sacks clutch? Also what will I owe? I think I remember you saying something about the flywheel.
Thanks

Question????
Bearing welded on/into input shaft?????
Was this at the flywheel end----OR--mainshaft-to input shaft??(nose /or/aft???

TDR>
The bearing in question is pressed onto the input shaft on the nose end. It slides into the housing on the front of the transmission. Where it slides into the housing it welded itself in place. The bearing locked and the in-put shaft turned inside the bearing race. Much heat and the teeth were torn off the in-put shaft. $1650. 00 for re-man from Stan. Trans. with new fifth gear fix. . I hope I explaned that correctly.
