Have a '97 and my fuel sending unit died. Will be some time before I can drop the tank and replace or repair the sending unit. Anybody know of any sending units besides the stock Dodge unit? Also is the low fuel light a seperate sender or is it tied into my dead sender? I will be depending on the low fuel light and milage to know how much fuel I have left.

You're stuck with the Dodge part, but it's only $35, don't let them tell you that you need the entire $250 module. Fuel light and level are in the same unit, watch your miles.

My gauge reads MT but the low fuel light is not on. Does this possibly narrow down my problem or is changing the sender the solution?

FUEL SENDER

DENIS, I HAVE HAD FIVE SENDERS REPLACED ON MY 95, THE LAST ONE REPLACED AT 77K, AND, BECAUSE I WENT TO THE SAME DEALER,AND LET THEM KNOW THE UNITS ARE FAULTY, ALL WERE UNDER WARRANTY!!!! I'VE GOT 116K ON NOW, AND EXCEPT FOR THE RECENT OIL SENDER, WHICH ARE ALSO A COMMON FAILURE ITEM, MY CUMMINS IS RUNNING SUPER!!!

FUEL SENDER

FORGOT TO ADD THAT IN ALL FIVE CASES, THE SENDER WENT OUT AT JUST OVER 1/2 FULL, I GOT TO USE THE TRIP ODOMETER,AND I USED TO FUEL WHEN I HAD 700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, AND WHEN THE LEVEL GOT TO UNDER THREE GALLONS,APPROX, I WOULD FUEL UP, AND AT ABOUT THAT LEVEL, THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WOULD COME ON. ANY LOWER AND YOU RISK PRIMING THE PUMP ( NOT FUN!! ).

I changed my sending unit about 200K miles ago. It actually went really well and was much easier than I thought. Should only take about two hours. Just make sure that the tank is pretty low before you try to lower it. I disconnected the fill return line and siphoned as much out as I could.

Good luck!

Sending unit

Denis, the one and only time I changed mine it only took a little over an hour to do it. I raised the bed on the truck and left the tank alone. This way you can change it anytime you want. Some people have said to dissconnect the taillight wireing, not necessary.

check out my website. I have pictures and directions on how to fix yours. Somebody sent me this back in the "TST list: days.

I replaced my sending unit and gauge still reads empty and the idiot light stays on. (Yes I've fueled her up several times since then. ) Do you think I got a bad unit or more likely a wiring problem?
