Have a 2004 1/2 3500 quad cab. I have noticed a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the dash/cup holder/ash tray????? Finally narrowed it down to the 4wd shifter. If I apply a little pressure to it, or actually stop and shift it to neutral, then back to 2wd, the rattle goes away for a short time. Anyone else experiencing this problem. Haven't taken it to the shop to complain about this yet!

Mine was making a noise too, but not sure it was the same noise you're hearing. Mine was the rubber boot squeeking. It didn't start doing it until I had put a product similar to Armoral on it. I figured it was the rubber folds rubbing against each other, so I put some talc on the boot and it quit. I hope you find it. I can't stand annoying squeeks or rattles in the cab either.

I had the same problem but more of a sqeak than rattle. After shifting it a couple of times it went away only to come back. I thought it was the boot contacting the lever itself but it appeared to be more in the linkage under the boot. I put truck up on lift and lubed the linkage area with some pb blast. That was around 500 miles and now have 7500 miles. I havent heard since.

I have the same 4wd X-Case lever squeak. I notice it when pushing the lever to the right, or away from your leg. Its pretty irritating but now that I see theres a solution, we'll give it a shot!

what shifter?? I have a knob for the 4wd. I have a really annoying rattle that sounds like there is a midget in my dashboard. I really dont want to take it to the dealer and have him keep it for 3 weeks and say i dont hear anything.

I am currently battleing the exact same problem, thought it was because I armor alled the boot, but then tried the talc method. Like stated above it appears to be coming from underneath. I guess ill have to try the lubing the linkage. It is very annoying, but doesn't show up if your shifted into 4x4.

Had the same noise on my 4000 mile vacation. Was driving me nuts. I pulled the boot up and sprayed some WD40 down there and that fixed it.

Mine too, pulled up the boot and sprayed silicone spray lube on the linkage,6000 miles and have not heard it return. Did my buddy's 04 1/2 also took care of the problem. If it returns I will hit it with permatex anti seize greese. I put this greese on my clutch pivot points under the dash and stopped that squeaking noise also.

I sprayed mine with wd 40 from below, last night. I didnt notice any noise this morning. It kinda looks like the bottom of the lever underneath rubs on the plasitc molding part of the pivot point. the light was kinda poor, so i just sprayed the area pretty good, and worked the lever a couple of times. I guess time will tell.

To pull the 4x4 shifter boot, lift up the plastic trim ring closest to the seat it is held in place with spring clips it will pop up. There are L clip in the rear that slide under the console, when you move the trim ring and boot towards the seat it all comes up. raise the boot and trim ring up over the shifter lever and you have access to the pivot points to lubricate.
