Well, I am going to go see what the dealer can do for me. I went drooling, I mean shopping, for an 05 BMW 650 Dakar yesterday. Some of you may remember I went about 6 months ago looking, and was going to wait. I refinanced my truck, and got a raise, so... :)

Dealer said he has a used 05 with 700 miles on it due in this Saturday and will be ready for sale by the next Saturday. It still has most the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty, with 35,300 miles left on it and just less than 3 years. Also has a 600 mile fluid, filter break-in appointment they will do on it, which is included in the original price.

I haven't seen it but it looks just like the other 05 Dakars except has a red seat instead of factory black. Gonna have to think about that part ;)

It's only $8500. I say "only" because new goes for almost $10,000.

Just sitting here waiting for the dealer to call me back.

Couldn't find the US site, here is the Canadian link:

Sweeeeeeett! I will be checking this out when you get it.

My commander just got a harley for his b-day. His wife gave it to him! does she have a sister???? Anyways, he brought today and as i was coming back to the dorms he was about to take off. He came walking by with a big smile on his face, looked like a little kid! I stood there as he fired er up. OOOHHHH, got to get a bike someday...

I think that price stinks. He's selling you a used bike for $8500? Is that out the door? MSRP is only $9290. I'm sure you could talk them down to $8500 for a new one. Have you looked at the KTM Adventure? More bike. Are you going to go off road? If not, consider looking at a Suzuki V-Strom 650. Highly economical and very reliable. Spend the extra $$ on Bombs for the bike... :)

But hey, if you have your Heart set on a Dakar, go for it. I just wouldn't pay $8. 5k for a used one. I know when it comes to motorcycles a person usually has their heart set on a certain model. Have fun with whatever you choose. :)

Well I still have to talk to him about the price. However, the base price model the link shows is not ABS or heated hand grip equipped. The used one has those. Those two options add about $750 to the base price. So, new would be just about $10,000.

It is used, one owner, and it's similarly priced as a demo model would be.

If you were me, what price would you try to get him down to?

Ah yes, options. I would offer for a new one 10k OTD, no higher. Used, I WOULDN'T pay over $9k OTD for the one you're talking about. It's still used, no matter how new, and the first service doesn't mean anything to me since I do it all on the motorcycles I own. That's my first accessory purchase- a factory service manual. But I really don't see a selling point in the dealer doing the 600 mile service, only because they're a dealer selling you a used bike. They should service it appropriately when they sell it to you, as a condition of the sale and for liability reasons, not as a bargaining tool for price. It should be included regardless.

But you may be able to do better on the price. I don't think the 650's are that popular with the R1200GS on the market. Good luck. I would still get the suzuki..... :D

Oh yeah, the service is included no matter what. I mentioned it to him, not him to me, as they were going to do it regardless. What does OTD mean anyway? Also, the bike is technically used, but since it's less than 1000 miles it's still "new".

I will let you know what I find out.

Gotcha! Thanks for the help! Oh, and yes, I did look at the V-Strom (what does Strom mean anyway?) Nice bikes too!

As for the 650 popularity, that is true. The one the dealer has coming in is being traded for a 1200GS due to it being too small for the guy. I think it will fit me well though.

Edit: Typed this up Friday afternoon and computer froze. Came in this morning and it was still waiting to be finished.

And what I meant by this is since the bike left the dealer's hands, it is considered "used". However, if the bike were to stay with the dealer, and be used as a demo bike, the bike could be sold as "new" until 1000 miles, and if this bike were to be a demo, with the 700 miles, it would still be "new", but it's not, so that's where the 1500 bucks comes off of it.
