Don, still haven't taken the truck back to the dealer. Will advise as I make the return trip.

Is it true? Anyone brave enough to test?

Seems like TCDiesel has sort of tested it by dumping deionized water in instead of Def? See thread below and locate TCdiesel's post. #24

I don't know if anyone has run it dry. I wouldn't recommend running it dry. Yoi will have urea crystals that you may never get out without service that could seize your pump/clog your nozzle. If you don't put in Def, at least put in clean water.

Adding DEF

In a 4th Gen Cummins not an EcoDiesel...

I just returned from a 5000+ mile trip of heavy hauling. Though I started with a full tank of DEF, the amount of weight and fuel I used required more DEF than typical, and I needed to add DEF a couple times. While it's certainly not as convenient as pulling up to a diesel pump, I found the bulk DEF I wanted both times and don't consider the cost much of a factor.

But I don't want to mess with the jugs of DEF and only want to use bulk/pump DEF if I can, and sometimes it's a hassle to find that on-the-road. When home, my commercial cardlock has DEF at a pump and it's as easy as filling the diesel.

If you only added water the system will throw the incorrect/contaminated DEF code. It has the sensor in the exhaust to measure the effectiveness of the urea conversion as long as it sees DEF in the tank. It would ignore the sensor (sort of) if it sees the tank is empty, but the remaining DEF will crystalize inside the tank and plumbing. It might work short term, but long term is not good.

Going on 3 years adding only deionized water during summer months, I will start adding DEF in OCT-March. When My Tanks reach 3/4 I fill them I keep them full all year , NONE have ever dropped below 2/3. I use about 16 gallons in the Cummins Rams and 8-10 in the Ecodiesel yearly.

Since I started this thread, it is only fitting that I give you the final update.

The truck was taken back to the dealership an they did the Recall R69 which replaced the SCR catalyst with an updated part (68263790).
TSB 18-064-15 seems to have the same info as the R69 recall. Mileage on truck:31,000'

Truck has been 1000 miles since the service work and, thus far , no problems.

My comment might be a bit off topic. But this diesel VM motori engine sounds better than the 4 cyl one my friend had in a jeep liberty.

He loves the Mercedes 6 cyl diesel in his current Cherokee, tho

Mall of these engines have great reputations- especially in Europe. However changing the fuel filter in that Benz V6 as it is in a Sprinter is nuts!
