After a few races wasn't it outlawed in the racing circuit? Its speed was terrific and the mileage was very good compared to the gas driven cars.
Big, my uncle,Jimmy Jackson, drove that car in the 1950 indy 500. it has a supercharger driven off the front of the crankshaft. that drive coupling broke about 50 laps into the race and did not finish the race. Cummins cast the block and head in aluminum and magnesium. it also had 2 injectors per cylinder. after the race they repaired the drive coupling and took the car to Bonyville salt flats and set the diesel speed record of 168 MPH ( as I recollect). my uncle had some BALLS, can you imagine going that fast with NO roll bar, roll cage, or seat belt ????? I think he had a leather football helmet. I think that record stood until the early 1970`s.In the second rendition of Cummins indy car, they laid the engine on its side and used a turbo charger instead of the super charger. the car was wider and lower than other race cars. it sat on the pole in its first race ( my uncle was not driving this car) and was kicking butt and taking names until the turbo inlet (witch was on the bottom side of the engine) got plugged up with rubber from the track, and it too did not finish the race. Cummins decided not to run the Indy 500 after that.Indy Cummins
