Re: steering wheel buttons with aftermarket head unit

My truck has the 6-speaker system in it. It is not marked Infinity anywhere.

If my take on what is mentioned above is correct, then the stock headunit provides the power, and the signal is split by a crossover in the doors for the tweets and mids. If this is correct, can't I just install my crossover in the door in place of the stock unit, then use the stock speaker wires out to my speakers? I've got a set of Infinity separates to install.

Hello, you state the wheel controls work with any radio offered but is there any way to hook them up to work with an aftermarket head unit. Please reply as this is annoying me. Thanks

I highly doubt it. I think I've read earlier that the steering controls talk to the head unit over the J-bus. No aftermarket unit that I've ever heard of supports such a connection.

Actually, if your aftermarket headunit has an infrared remote to it, PAC (Pacific Accessory Corporation) does offer a Universal Steering Wheel Radio Control Interface (part number SWI-X). It plugs into the wire from the wheel that goes to the stock deck... then you "program" it by pressing the button on the wheel, then the corresponding button on the remote for your new head unit. Then, when you press that button on the wheel, it's as if you pressed that button on the remote for the deck you have. Voila! Actually, you can make them do everything, not just volume and track/station.

You can find PAC at http://www.go2pac.com

Keith, You are correct but I would be hesitant thinking the stock head unit could power the separates well enough to sound decent. JMHO

Well, it was just a quick fix until I get my new headunit in this weekend, which will drive my amp that will drive the speakers. Thought if I got the speakers in this week, that's one less thing to do this weekend.

Problem I ran into is the Vifa mids I have are too deep to fit in the doors. Looks like I'm gonna step back from separates to a set of 6x9's. Probably the Infinity Kappa 693. 5's.

I had to build a plate to space out the speakers in my doors to allow clearance for the power windows. I used 1/4" MDF and I would not recommend much more than that. I get a very slight buldge in the door panel now because of the spacer.

I have always been a big fan of Vifa's. I was surprised to read that is what you are trying to install as I think most people overlook the Vifa's or just do not even know about them.

If you do not end up installing Vifa's, I would opt for a 6. 5" speaker over a 6x9" unless you are really after the bass response which I assume not to be an issue because I imagine you will also be install in sub.

Best of luck

I agree with Cooker, get 6. 5's. You never see high end stereos with elongated mid-bass speakers for a good reason. You get much less cone-flex with a round speaker. I went with MB Quart 6. 5 in all four doors. Like Cooker I made a adapter out of 1/4 MDF for the front too. :)

BTW, I have NEVER heard of Vifa's and I know *almost* all the brands. This just show's you that *almost* is not *all*. :)

Got a website.

Well, the system consists of an Alpine CDA-9833 head unit running a RF Power 551x (70x4@4ohm) to the front and rear speakers.

The rear doors have the 5-1/4" coaxial Infinity 52. 5i's in them. The fronts should have been the 60. 5CS set I have talked about, but I just ordered the Infinity 693. 5 3-way 6x9's. I'll see what I think of them and then make a decision to change or keep them. At this point, just having a decent system in the truck is the goal... I'm sick of stock. The 6x9's are an easy install, so I'll get those in and see what it sounds like.

As you guessed, I do have subs in the truck. Just had a box built to fit under the rear seat. Built 3" spacers to jack up the rear seat, then made a box fit. It has a fiberglass bottom with 3/4" MDF sides/front/back/top. About 4cu-ft of airspace total. It's got a pair of Resonant Enginnering SX10's in it, ported. Driving them is a RF Power 1001bd mono class D amp (rated 1000wRMS @ 2 ohm). Should hit pretty well I think.

Well since the last post on this thread the price of that controller went from 39. 99 to 59. 99. That is complete BS. What the heck happened. Goes to show you that you need to buy things immediatly. Not when you can *afford* it.

Infinity is junk

I have infinity in my 98. 5. YEs it sounds great. When it works completely. . Pretty much on any given day I will lose the left front speaker or rear left. And sometime front right. It is completely random. Its pretty annoying. I have to constantly adjust the balance to compensate from the non working speaker of the day. Sorry I had to vent a little.

Bone stock 98. 5 4x4 5 Speed 71,000 miles.

My infinity radio has turned out to have a definite finite life. It would quit playing AM stations, so I replaced it with my brothers spare- which had problems of its own. The cd player refuses to play MOST cds, skips at random, won't play burned cd's, and is generally frustrating to deal with. On top of that, the radio station preset buttons are apparently demon possessed- you can push one button and it sends you to a preset station for an adjacent button. Sometimes I have to push the same button 4-6 times to get the station I want #@$%!

I dont know which is worse, the radio or the annoying mortgage commercials.

so the consensus is that the head unit output full range on four channels which is fed directly to the rear speakers and to a passive crossover in the front doors to split it between the tweets and the 6x9's? I'm about to tear mine up, and I'd like to know what to expect so that I can reuse some existing wiring.

With over 180K on my factory Infinity head unit it still works fine. I replaced the speakers with some new Infinity models and found the rear speakers go thru a crossover thats located in the front door. Alot happens in the front doors as the A piller tweeters go through there as well. There are several stereo configurations offered in 2nd gen trucks, but my factory CD player setup is fine by me. I am guilty of listening to the turbo and exhaust more than the radio though. To each his own.

HELLO. .

I have a 98 Dodge Ram with the Infinity system,,of course the front speakers are blown.

I bought a set of INFINITY speakers but they were 4 Pin connectors an mine are 6 Pin.

Any one got any ideas on how to convert?

I had some OLD speaker an tried to jump the contacts to see if I could get to work,,but three differant wires gave me SOUND!!... Just wondering if one pin or color wire is best for hooking up to after market speakers??

THANKS

Mike

THANKS

Mike

I have a '96 and an '06 both did have the Infinity system in them. The '96 was unmarked but the '06 is well marked. I changed the system in the '96 to Pioneer deck and Pioneer 4-way 6x9's in the front and sounds much better. The '06 though, I love the way it sounds factory with the Infinity and the steering wheel controls are nice to have and all I have to do is put a line output converter in it to hook up some subs.

You can just buy a speaker wire harness for it for less than $20. Best Buy should have them or you could go to any stereo shop or Crutchfield.com
