It seems as though the amp on the right door speaker went bad and now the door and pillar speaker don't work. A tech at a local dealership said this was sort of common. Are there any options for these amps on the speakers? Dealer wants $132 for speaker assembly, amp not available seperately. Local audio shop claims dealer least expensive route otherwise $1000 for new sound system. I'm no audiophile and my daze of 300 watts in each ear are a bit behind me and besides I don't want to completely drown out engine/turbo music. Its got to be compatible with a 98. Any thoughts?

thanks,

David

well, you have two options:

1) pony up for the replacement amp/speaker assembly.

2) ditch the factory speakers, and get aftermarket speakers powered by the head unit. any decent audio shop should be able to do this swap for much less than $1000.

I thought that the stock "head unit" isn't designed to power the front speakers hence the seperate amps. I guess I don't really understand this system.

I had the speakers out of my 98 with the infinity.

I recall that the Front "pair" of wires came from the radio and went to the amp, which is mounted on the back of the speaker. then a pair of wires came out of the amp and went up to the tweeter, and another pair came out and went to the speaker.

You could replace the speaker with a 6x9, figure out a way to build a bracket to mount a small amp inside the door, then use this to power the 6x9, and maybe a crossover to send just the highs up to the tweeter. I have a feeling that you could run the tweeter with the power radio power before the amp, then use just the amp to power the speaker.

There is already switched power inside the doors for the factory amps, not sure how much current it will handle, but its there.
