Infinity Stereo Systems - 1996 vs 2002

Here's the deal. The Infinity system in our 1996 Ram 3500 has the head with the 5-channel equalizer and also includes CD controls that operate the Dodge 6-disc remote CD changer which plugs into the back of the head. I like this system because of the integrated 6-disc CD changer.



I have a 2002 on order that (I assume) will come with the Infinity head which incorporates only a 1-disc CD player. I'd really like to swap the 2002 head into the 1996 and bring the 1996 head and CD changer into the 2002, plugging the 2002 speakers into the 1996 head. Assuming the 2002 Infinity system is like the 2001. 5, will this work? Has the system design or speaker-to-head plug arrangement changed from 1996 to 2001. 5?

For not much more effort you could dump the Infinity and go the ICE bomb route, complete with retention of all your rear of steering wheel controls which changes the standard factory OEM presentation into 3rd party equipment.

Another Route

Here's another way to go if you so desire: When I wanted to install a cd player in my brand new truck, I looked at the Mopar/Infinty systems at my local dealer and was very dismayed at the price. I ended up going to crutchfield.com and buying a 12 disc player from Sony for under $300(less than half the price of the Infinity)! It plugs into the antenna, so all you have to do is turn the radio to a certain station, turn the cd changer on, and you're in business. The controls mount just to the left of the wheel below the dash, very easy to get to and your copilot can't mess with the stereo. It's an easy install (I have no technical stereo ability) since Crutchfield sends you directions specific to your vehicle. They are also very good with customer service. I'd go that way again, in fact, after mechanical BOMB's are complete, I'll be going back for an amp and new speakers.

A company called PAC make various cable configurations which takes the standard rear of steering wheel presentation, which is set up for the factory Infinity system. It's neat to retain all the capabilities of the buttons with a quality after market system, when connected to after-market stuff without compromising the stock-factory look, inside the cab.



BTW, don't forget the dynamat!!
