The coolest thing is that they have access doors to get into the crankcase to inspect. Imagine what it would be like to climb inside an engine to inspect the bearings.

Yea, some of these big engines are double-acting like a steam engine too.



Here's some pictures I took back in 1976 of some double-acting, tandem (two pistons on same piston rod - both double-acting) natural gas engines. These engines had about 36" bores. Stroke was probably 4 or 5 feet. See http://little-mountain.com/blake/pages/WVsteam.html

Blakers, your right, double acting diesels in big engines were made but a general failure I think. They couldn't keep piston rod glands in them at the time. Maybe with new materials someone might try it now.
