Dodge Factory Installed Gooseneck Hitch

Im shopping around for a 20+5 gooseneck trailer, It has to have "wedge" ramps so I can back the truck on them (corn pro has exactly what I want). 14K load tandem single axels...

Im stuck between the Corn Pro and BIG TEX trailers.....

Corn pro has "dexter" Torsion axels and BIG TEX has leaf spring axels... . which is the better axel?

websites:

CornPro™ Trailers

Gooseneck and Pintle Trailers : 14GN TRAILER - TRAILERS - Utility Equipment Trailers - Gooseneck Dump Trailers - Big Tex Trailers, home of the largest flatbed utility trailer and industrial equipment trailer manufacturer in the nation. BigTex can des

corn pro also comes with "The Engager" break away kit which is pretty slick:

Breakaway Kit complete with battery and charger

any input and advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

Ian Coleman

Here are pics of the Corn Pro that Im looking at... .

Dad has a 1998 CornPro tandem dually 28+5. It's tagged with a 20k sticker, he claims to have ordered the 12. 5k axles. He's got the flip-up beavertail and dual speed jacks up front.

All things considered, it's been a good trailer. And it regularly gets overloaded. The only complaint that he's really had about it is that the rims are cheap, he finds pinhole leaks occasionally.

Torsions suck. Plain and simple. Great for horse trailers and unfortunantely necessary on livestock trailers. Everything else gets leafs. Torsions do not handle overloading like leafs do... trust me on that one.

Do you want the 3 ramps? 2 rams with a center pop-up is a lot nicer if you don't need the center ramp.

I only want 2 ramps but Ill take 3 for the right price, I dont need the center of the beaver to pop up as I highly doubt Id need it at all. I just want the wedge ramps to back the truck tires on when the ramps are folded up.

whats so bad about the torsion axels though... . our current 18' car hauler needs a suspension makeover since the pivit points are shot and worn out.

here are a couple photos of my rig and 2 cor pros Ive towed:

Im heading back to the BIG TEX dealer tomorrow... Ill post some pics...

Torsions ride rough empty and OK loaded. But they don't equalize like leafs do so when you go thru a hole or over a bump, one axle carries all the weight.

any reasy why they would put torsions under it then? they arnt cheap axels!! so far Corn Pro has been the best built that Ive seen in person.

Ian

Torsions are idiot proof. Pretty much nothing there to "go wrong". They ride nice and smooth when loaded, but there is no equalizing between the axles. When you go over a set of railroad tracks (or any bump), one axle carries all the wait.

Im tring to get all the info I can, the dealership just picked up corn-pro and previously sold cars/trucks and RV's so I asked about Torsion VS Leaf and the sales rep was pretty clueless... :-{} he commented about the smooth ride on the RV's..... but I said "its not a RV" and yet not real good answer.

I just Emailed Corn-Pro, so Ill see what there response is...

Dexter torflex:

Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - Torflex Axles

a neat feature from Dexter that I like:

Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - E-Z Flex Suspension

I'd be happy to quote you. Our quality is on par with Big Tex (our trailers are heavier) and what I consider us to be better than Corn-pro (I'm speaking in terms of construction, weld quality and so on) they may be a bit more polished off, but we spend a ton of time prepping the trailers prior to paint. We should also have them hammered on price.

I personally can't stand the torflex axles. We recently built a trailer for a customer that had them, I pulled the trailer and it handled terribly! It rode like Slue Foot Sue on Widowmaker!:D

They also have a tendency to fail if loaded and driving over rough terrain (I lost one on an enclosed trailer of mine doing this). They work for horse or livestock trailers, but I don't like them at all on equipment trailers.

Our trailers come standard with a torque tube, bolt on jacks, full paint/primer, dexter axles, 25k coupler, chain hold downs on the ramps, treated #2 lumber, 12" 19lb frame, risers and neck, 16" crossmembers and 12" i-beam frame crossmembers - cut to fit and fully welded. Plus a 2 yr warranty.

I'd look at the wiring on the trailers your considering. Seems like you can tell alot about the quality of a trailer by the quality of the wiring.

can you shoot me a PM or post, Identical to the corn pro shown in the first post with the same ramps (wedge) but I only need 2 not 3 ramps. 20+5 14K Also can you send me some more photos, the brute page is a little limited on pics Oo. Dont forget Id be comming from Michigan or it would have to be delivered:confused:

Thanks!

Ian

Torsions suck. Plain and simple. Great for horse trailers and unfortunantely necessary on livestock trailers. Everything else gets leafs.

Need air ride. :D IIRC, Kelderman does trailer as well.

Spring ride is the best way to go, vs torsion. If the trailer is built right, it will still pull very nice. If not, it will beat the crap out of you.

I wish air ride was standard equipment on ALL trailers.

I'd look at the wiring on the trailers your considering. Seems like you can tell alot about the quality of a trailer by the quality of the wiring.

Preferably sealed harnesses, vs Scotch-lock crap.

I'm supposed to have a new site rolled out here before too long, I'll check on that, but I'll get you pics in the morning. Shoot me an email at -- email address removed -- I'll send you a quote/spec sheet and pics.

We can deliver, meet part way, or you can pick up:)

I love my Big Tex. It's a 12k (96" wide) 20+5, which is built identical to the 14k just with lighter axles. I bought the 12k because I wanted 96" wide and you can't get a Big Tex 14k in 96" wide. It has the leaf spring suspension with Dexter axles, which I think is also pretty much idiot proof design. My Big Tex doesn't have the test feature on the break away but it also ties into the charging system. You will like the self cleaning dovetail in the rain/mud but it can break a leg if you gotta walk up and down it!! It looks like the Corn Pro in the picture has a chain box in the front and steps on the sides, which my Big Tex did not. I later added a tool box so the chain box was not needed, but the steps would be nice.

how old is your trailer? the Big TEXs' Ive looked at locally have a chain box and steps now. The trailers didnt seem to be painted very well (missing spots) and that is a concern since Im here in Michigan, a couple of them have the "BIG TEX" decals on the neck that were crooked & faded. Did you take yours off or ?

Im waiting on a gooseneck hitch then Ill get a trailer on the 27th Oo.

Oh yeah I love your fist gen!

I have the a Big Tex 24 +5 14k and have had no problems except the Carisle tires came apart within two years. Replaced them with Michelin,I believe XPS and hav'nt looked back. Bought this trailer about 4 years ago and it has an open chain box in the front and steps on both sides with grab handles.
