I had the trans line recall done this morning just as many others have but after browsing the earlier thread regarding this topic it seemed vague as to what exactly is replaced and why so I figured I would start a new thread for those who will be having this TSB done in the near future.

The line in question is the short one that comes from the transmission and goes to the heat exchanger that's mounted to the engine. Apparently under extreme duty, vibrations emitted from the trans travel through the rigid line and can crack the heat exchanger/cooler.

However, (here's why I resurrected this) the crack is internal, meaning no fluid will leak onto the ground. Instead, you have cross contamination of ATF in the cooling system and antifreeze in the transmission. This of course is disastrous for the transmission. The new line has a rubber hose in the middle to dampen any vibrations and takes no time to install.

One thing I did read in the other thread that I found interesting is that the dealer has the ability to check the "duty life" of the engine through the pcm. If the duty life exceed's certain parameters then the cooler will be replace regardless of a leak or not.

Hope this helps

Rosco

Internal leakage may be true but it's not the only failure mode. I had the fitting boss at the cooler fail such that it leaked externally. It was a very slow leak at first and I was on a long road trip, but lucky for me I had lots of opportunities to do a walk around. The first sign of a problem was my white boat turning pink.

Here's the thread I wrote way back when it happened.

Never thought I would be on the leading edge of a recall.

So does anyone know what the rubber internal damper mean to those of us that want a temperature probe in the line?

Pcline,

I think the new hose will still accept a temperature probe. The revised line comes out of the trans as a rigid line and goes into the heat exchanger as a rigid line. It's only at the midway point between the trans and cooler that the line changes from rigid tubing to a rubber hose for about 5 inches or so.

Thanks Rosco. I read your first post incorretly. I took it to mean that there was a rubber hose INSIDE of the steel tube to help damp out vibrations.

Now that I read your post agian I realize what you are saying.

Thanks again.

Pics

If anyone could post a pic of the new line that would be a good way of determining if the work was really done. Not that I don't trust my dealer of course.

Has anyone experienced a buz or hum in the speedometer area after the transmission hose fix. I have a noise that wasn't there before. It appears to be vibration related but holding or moving the new tube (hose) has no effect.

It could be the fill tube vibrating against the bracket that it is tie down to.

Thanks for the suggestion, it was right on. Service manager had inserted a piece of rubber over the fill tube at same time I had recall done. (an attempt to stop a rattle without success) . I removed the rubber and the dash buzz disappeared .

I like this truck but there are so many areas of vibration that show up in various places. Guess its the power.

Thanks: Bob

I just had mine done last Friday. I work nights so I had to pick it up from the dealer and drive to work seven miles out of town. On the way to work I noticed that the heater wasn't warming up and neither was the engine. Then the temp. guage went up quickly. I got to work and looked in the radiator to find it was about a gallon and a half low and there was a air pocket that the dealer mech. didn't purge out of the cooling system. Of course the transmission fluid is low too. When I called them up on Saturday morning after work to ask them about it all I got was a salesman telling me that I would have to wait till monday morning before anyone was in the shop.

The dealer told me that they had to replace the line as well as the cooler because it was bad too.

I don't know about these dealers. Now I'm wondering if I have water in the transmission and if it is going to explode on me. I'm planning a trip to Moab late next month.

What kind of auto trans. fluid does the diesel take? Is it some special Mopar fluid or will Dex. or Mercron work?

Thanks
