I have a 97 that had a automatic and i put a 5 spd and a u. s. gear overdrive in it. Then i tightened the gov springs in the pump to get more rpms and then i put a 3000 rpm gov spring kit for a 98 12v 5 spd and now it doesnt have the power it did with the factory springs, i also have the biggest stop plate that the automatic pump allowed any ideas?

So you took stock springs out of a 215 pump and put in your pump?

3K springs are 3k springs. Doesnt matter which pump. Stock 215 springs are only a little better than the other's.

Did you adjust the gov lever?

the 3k spring kit was a aftermarket kit that a guy had for his 98 but didnt want to put it in because he was already getting 3k rpms. But my pickup would only do 2750, so my friend that is a diesel mechanic pulled the 7/8 plug out of the side of the injection pump and tightend up the gov springs and then i would get 3100 rpms but only up to 3rd gear and then it would go back to the 2750 rpms. So i put the 3k spring kit in but now i have seen it up to 3600 rpms and i backed out of it. Would we have those springs too tight? It has better low end torque than it had before, but now i can barley get 30 psi of boost and before it would peg out my 35 psi guage.

I dont know what you guys did!! Id check:

governor lever adjustment

stud height on the gov assy

make sure he got the woodruff key back in for the shut off solenoid

make sure the solenoid is giving full fuel

Just because you "get" 3600 rpm doesnt mean you are at full fuel to that point. You will start to pull fuel back rack before its all over.

Thats the reason you would only get 3100 in the gears below 3rd. After that you dont have enough fuel at 3100 to make the power req'd to turn that rpm at that load. It was defueling sooner.

what do u mean with the gov adj lever? What is the stud height on the gov assy? Is it internal or external? The woodruff key is back in? Also what is the difference between a automatic pump and a manual pump? Would the injectors out of a 215 hp do any good?

uh huh.....

This will explain some of it. Secondly, You are better off to follow the instructions very closely and do something yourself than to let someone else do it and HOPE it's right.

It covers gov. lever adjustment and GSK installation. You can go back and compare what you have against what the instructions say should have been done.

If your fuel plate (AKA Cam Plate, Stop plate, doohickie) is too far forward in the pump, the lever that is designed to ride up the plate can actually fall under the plate. The lever has to move vertically up the profile that's cut into the plate in order to give the right amount of fuel at the right rpm. If it falls under the plate, it won't work because it can't move upward like it's supposed to.

If the gsk is too tight, it will still cause the fuel to cut out at higher rpm IMO.

Also, you have to consider the fact that your plate is going to defuel on the top end.
