Hello all. We have a 1993 Dodge Ram 2500. 5. 9L with Banks exhaust system. We recently replaced the fuel injection pump, transfer pump and the fuel injectors. Now we are experiencing low power on hills or hard acceleration. it also blows white smoke when under a load. We have gone through the entire suction side of the engine and not found any air leaks... . all seems good. On the pressure lide we have no fuel leaks.

Any thoughts?... .

I'm guessing it's pump timing but i'm not sure if its retarded or advanced too much. Where did you get the work done at? How recently ago did you have all the work done? If i wasn't happy with something after getting worked on i'd take it back to the shop that worked on it. Just my . 02 Welcome to the TDR, you'll find a bunch of people here that are very knowledgeable

Are you sure you are getting boost? You need to get gauges installed at the earliest opportunity. At least boost and pyro.

Hell, the low power sort a sounds like mine before I started turning things up!:D

By the way - welcome to the site! You are close to me, I'm about 45 miles up the road.

Pump wise retarded timing will cause low power and advanced timing can produce white smoke. A couple of questions here.

1. About how far from the head is the pump at its closest point?

2. What injectors are in it? Willin' to bet they are stock. There's a number on the exposed part of the injector just above the nut that holds the injector to the head - let us know what that number is SB 4 digits.

3. Have you checked throttle travel to see if you are getting full travel when the go pedal is on the floor?

4. Are you seeing white smoke all the time or just when it's cold?

Your pump timing is retarded. The measurement between the top of the pump and the head of the engine most likely won't matter because the pump most likely was pinned if you bought it new or rebuilt. I would rotate the pump towards the head approx 1/4" with the pump bolt and nuts loose if you have the room too.

If not rotate the engine over by the harmonic balancer bolts (turn clockwise) so that the pump (with the 3 nuts and 1 bolt being loose) rotates away from the head 1/2". Then rotate the pump towards the head 1/4" and tighten nuts and bolt on pump. Start it up and take it for a test drive. You should be good to go.

Hey Mark, on another subject do you have any updates on your pickup for us? I'm interested to see how it's going. Maybe you could start a thread and tell us.

Chris

Like Mark said, kick up the timing. Most shops (for warranty reasons) will set the timing at its most retarded position. Plus, these same rebuilders will set the power levels at their lowest settings. All this is done because of the poor reputation the VE has.

But if it is a NEW pump, you might want to check to see if this pump was destened for a generator or something in that area instead of a road rig.

Either way, set up the timing and the power AFTER you get guages.

I would also bump the timing a bit. I personally may not go 1/4," but I'm not as bold as some here (hint, hint, nascar mark ;) ). I have played with mine, and it does best overall, at about 1/16" above stock, but mine was also a Colo truck, and nonIC. Some high altitude trucks get a little boost in timing to compensate, some dont.

Daniel

I mentioned 1/4" because I believe the pump timing is about 1/8" retarded from stock setting and the extra 1/8" would put him in the ball park of better than stock timing.

Hey Chris,

Truck is running good. I haven't taken it out of valet mode yet (low power mode) and it makes 67psi and won't go past 1000 deg's. :D The transmission is killer too. I hooked up a floor switch to control lock up on and off. I would never go back to fluid coupling only again. I have to get a set of ladder bars real soon as I can feel the rear axle saying :{

Mark

DUH!!!

Didnt think of the pump being retarded and needing to be moved up to stock spec, then more to get optimum gains.

Don't let mark kid you,,, he's the one that talked me into advancing my pump timing... ..... mark, I still think 2 days advance is too much but it does go like stinK ;):D:D

Still working on it, thank you for all the replies. Rechecked pump timing and advanced it as well, still falls on it's face on hard acceleration and smokes like it shouldn't it didn;t always act this way, so I know it's not normal. When the pump and injectors were replaced it ran much, much better and only had this minor glich on hills under load around 70-75mph. But it's deteriorating... . so I think the pump is coming off and going back to be rechecked. If the injectors were the problem I'd have more of a missfire as I figure it..... I do know that I will get it fixed... one way or the other and appreciate the help
