Overheating in city driving

Here goes, was driving from Dallas to Austin, shut the truck down in Hillsboro at the Exxon station, tried to start her up again and it just cranked. Cracked the injectors because I thought I may have some air in the fuel lines still would not start. Let it sit for a while and tried her again, she acted lik she wanted to start so I kept cranking on her and lo and behold she did. Drove to Austin and as soon as I exit the freeway and hit the clutch, she dies. Limp into a parking lot and she is running, but running really rough. Drove around the parking lot a little and whenever I pushed the clutch it it would die. Decided to leave her there. Had her towed into the dealership the next day. Sat on the lot for two days and finally they call and say the injection pump is the problem. I asked about the fuel pump and they said it was fine. They replaced the injection pump under warranty and now I have her back. Running fine. Still wonder if I should replace the fuel pump? I was thinking the fuel pump would go out before the injection pump. I gotta get some guages.

I can sympathize with you on that pump failure. Mine quit in the middle of a busy intersection. No warning. No skipping or sluggish throttle. No clue as to what had happened. It just quit and no way in h--- would it hit a lick. Any way the injector pump failed and dealer replaced it but I was still worried about the lift pump which dealer said was OK. When I told him to put a new lift pump on and I would pay for it he told me that there was no reason for me to waste my money. He was right. Truck runs fine now. However I have installed a SW fuel pressure guage just to be able to keep an eye on fuel pressure. This guage would probably be a good idea for you even if just for your peace of mind concerning your fuel pressure. LOL.

If your concerned about the lift pump, lets hook up. I have a mechanical gauge and hose that can be taped to the windshield so you can get a real world WOT test of the pump pressure. I've seen the way techs at the dealer test fuel pressure, w/ the truck sitting in a bay. Thats no way to get an accurate measurement.

You better get that lift pump tested the right way! The only way to do it right is to see how far it drops at wide open throttle... not idle speed. When a truck is sitting with a dead injection pump you can't necessarily do a WOT test now can you? If need be,buy a 0-15psi test gauge at any tool store(usually $15 bucks) and attach an 1/8 pipe fitting(for 98-99's) or an R-12 a/c shrader valve(for 00-01's) and test it yourself periodically. Inexpensive, but money well spent.

If you need a new pump they're $135 at Cummins.

part #

It would be helpful when everyone recommends a lift pump from Cummins that they would give a part # If anyone needs it here it is... . 3990105.

Weir, would definately like for you to look at my truck. I rode in your truck at the last Texas Ramboree in Kerrville, I do have you card. I will give you a call or drop you an email whichever is best.

Thanks.

I was so excited about the next Ramboree, and then I realized I have to go to a wedding in California on the 29th. I would skip the wedding but I happen to be the best man. Darn the luck.
