Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Injection pump timing question

I am trying to figure out what I need to time an injection pump. I have a delivery valve socket on order, but I don't have nor can I use a barring hub because my transmission adapter does not have a provision for one. I did fabricate a hub today that bolts to the damper to turn the engine so I have that covered. I have a dial indicator, but I don't have the dial indicator holder that screws in place of the delivery valve holder. If I buy the dial indicator holder, will any dial indicator work, or do I need the dial indicator sold in the kit? Then all I have to do is find a pump I can afford... .

Get the timing kit since it has an extension for the dial indicator, a special holder for it to screw into the pump barrel, and the dial is metric, so you don't have to do conversions from inches. The kit should have a barring tool. Turning the damper is too abrupt. You also need a puller for the pump drive gear. Plus knowledge because it sounds easier reading this board than it usually turns out to be.

I can't use the Cummins barring tool because there's no hole in the adapter for one. My only option is to use the damper attachment tool I made. I can use a long breaker bar for lots of leverage. I have a harmonic balancer puller, I figured that would work. Whatcha think? I have got to do this as cheaply as possible, but if something is a necessity of course I'll have to get it.

Danny, the timing can be done with just a dial indicator and a steering wheel/harmonic balancer puller, but it's a major pain. If you have a mag mount for the dial indicator, and a long stem or extension for the indicator you can pull it off without the socket adaptor. Takes lots of time checking and rechecking since you want to be sure of your readings, both the zero reading and the reading after turning the pump. If the indicator is not mounted on the same vertical plane as the cam lobes of the pump, you can get strange readings.



I agree with Joe, the metic indicator is the way to go, I've used both, go metric if possible, if not, just do the conversion.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've got a Starrett mag base. Right now I've got more time than money so if I can do it with what I've got I don't care if it takes a bit longer. I'd still like to buy the dial indicator and holder when funds will allow.
