Today i am driving my pickup and noticed it felt a little different on the bottom end. Running a little different. Hard to explain but right off the bottom it felt like a motorcycle does with the choke on. Well I continue on and noticed a huge cloud of white/blue smoke rolling out the tailpipe and no power. This only happens when you are decelerating and then just crack open the throttle 10 percent or so and hold it there. Power is normal in every other throttle position. So I go right to the dealer and take the service manager for a ride. Great guy by the way, best service guy I have ever dealt with. So he says he thinks its fuel not antifreeze or oil. He thinks its either a pump or a bad injector. So straight home i go and swap out the injectors and everything else it did not come with from the factory. No change. Checked oil for antifreeze and its clean. Does this sound like a VP44 on its way out?

the 1693 is a companion code. The 2016 is the Vp44 timing circuit fault code. That is not good. Id check the lift pump pressures,if there within specs there it is mostly likely the VP44. :(

Mine just did the same thing this weekend out in the desert. The fuel pressure guage went from 13lbs to 0. Truck would run but could not move. Had to have the little bro rescue me with a new lift pump. Truck runs like new now. Got scared till I checked the fuel pressure.

Thanks for all the input! Fuel pressures are 15+idle, 12 cruising and 8 wot. So its the vp44 more than likely:(

good readings

Boost,

those readings are actually good and typical. But it does not mean the pump puts that out consistently. Is the LIft pump cutting out occasstionally?

robt

Mine had these exact characteristics. It even tripped the P2016 code. Diesel shop says "VP is toast, better replace, but would run ok, dont know how long with just a new lift pump". I had them put a lift pump on it and I have been driving it for 1-1/5 years and about 30K miles. Who knows, the VP may puke tomorrow, but for now it runs good.

lucky

makes me think the lift pump may be occassionally underperforming, causing VP44 problem and resultant code that latched up.

Sounds like you caught yours early before permanent damage was done.

Robert,

I have not noticed my fp guage down below 8 and do keep an eye on it. But about 10k ago(at 42k now) I was driving to work and noticed the guage would go from 15 at idle to 0 with the slightest touch of the throttle. I drove i about 3 miles to the dealer and they replaced the lift pump. Maybe some damage was done then? Also today the truck ran perfect, no smoke or stumble.

the funny thing is about a week ago it was time to license it again. Runs about $350/yr here. I thought either license it again and keep it another year or get a shiny new 600. Oh well, its been a great truck and does everything I need it to do and I dont know if I could live without the noise anyways:)

Have a buddy with an '02 and was having a surge at idle. 110K on the truck and original lift pump. Guess what? Lift pump was bad. Replaced the lift pump and the surge is less pronounced but still there. Dealer thinks the VP44 may be going.
